    Default bearing follower

I have a spindle moulder and recently learnt the folly of not using a pin when shaping, any way I digress, I recently saw an article in the recent Australian Wood Review where an article by Neil Erasmus used a bearing follower.

I have been trying to locate one but have been unsuccessful at this point, would anyone know where to point me for a 100mm bearing follower, so my fingers will feel a lot safer when follwoing a template.

    Much appreciatted

What type of collars are you running?
It is possiple to get a pair of collars with one of them being a follower.
Any good machinery house that carries woodworking machinery should be able to get them for you.Try Hare and Forbes.
If you are working from a template let it run on the top collar above the knives.

ABSOLUTELY run the bearing on top with a template, I know someone who lost three fingers to the first knuckle by running the template on the bottom; the job slipped on the pins and dragged him straight into the cutters.

Freud sell them, but don't seem to make a 100mm OD. Maybe the 4 9/16'' will work?:

there's a nice pic on the link of how to fit the collar.

Try the Felder and Dimar websites too.

gdf26562, the above link shows an ordinary bearing. (Rubber shields needed)

You should be able to go to your local bearing company armed with the diameter of your spindle and get a bearing 100mm OD.

You may need a spacer for the ID which someone can simply knock up.

    I see that a 6309DDU Single-Row Deep Groove Ball Bearing = ID45 X OD100

Or if your spindle is 30mm then a 6306DDU Single-Row Deep Groove Ball Bearing ID30 X OD72 with a ring pressed on to make the OD 100mm ?

Neil Erasmus here. I get my bearing followers specially made by KR Engineering here in Perth - they are the people who sell Felder equipment. Essentially, they use a plain ball race with an ID of 30mm (which matches my spindle shaft) and turn an aluminium housing for it whose OD matches my cutterblock - 100mm. You have to be mindful to ensure that you have proper shaft spacers that don't foul the aluminium housing on the one side, or the cutterblock on the other.

I use my spindle, in most cases, with the bearing below the cutterblock as this is the only way my special jigs can work. If you follow my instructions in the AWR article, you'll find this is very, very safe. If the bearing is above the work, there is no safe way to secure the template to it, excepting to nail or screw it on - unsatisfactory method!

    Trust this helps!

    cheers, Neil Erasmus Erasmus Designs

Did you look at the date on the thread before you posted? Pretty sure they've got it sorted after 9 years
