    Default Birthday Present

My son dropped in for a visit yesterday. "I have your birthday present in the van but you will have to help me carry it in" he told me. Oh yeah, sure i thought, it's probably something really small.
He wasn't kidding. This is what he gave me.

It was tucked away in his boss's shed. "I have no idea what it is but i'm pretty sure you haven't got one." he tells me.

I have cleaned it up a bit and rewired it. It runs beautifully, moves smoothly and there is no play anywhere. It's in pretty good shape. A new blade and a table and fence and we are good to go. Oh and some sort of blade guard. That big, exposed blade is a bit scary.
It is a Cousens Supersaw. About 500mm crosscut, 300mm blade, compound mitres and can take a dado blade.

It has dual pulleys but only one belt. Will adding the second belt make a difference? If anyone has any info on this saw they would like to share i would appreciate it. Can't find anything with google. I knew nothing about RAS's until i did a bit of reading on here last night.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

Now you need a new shed to put it in.

I always need a new shed. I had just settled on a layout of the shed to (sort of)efficiently use the tools i had. Will have to have a rethink now. I can see this being the main cut off saw and retire the Makita CMS.

Looks like a real old school gem. Looks rather heavy though.
Should last many years to come.

Very heavy, but well made. Says Made by Cousens Engineering of Sydney but i have a suspicion that there may be several brands that look very much the same.

A couple of bits of perspex with 1 hole at the front and one curved slot as pivots work great as a guard. You'll need to drill 2 holes in each side of the blade cover to mount them - just loosely enough to let it swing freely - with a couple of washers and wing nuts/bolts. As for the other drive belt; it won't make much difference unless you plan on cutting really large stock in ironbark or something similarly hard. We've been running a few industrial machines (about 10hp) at work with one belt missing and never had power transfer problems. If you do decide to go the second belt, make sure you change both at the same time or you'll get slipping from the slight difference in tension and it just gets messy from there.

Enjoy the new toy, it looks like a great find

    Default Supersaw

One or two belts will depend on what you want to do with it. If you put it into big hardwood you will definitely need two When these saws were brand new they had a sliding shield at the front of the blade, the trouble was they had a habit of sliding down in mid cut so most of them were taken off. The joinery shop I worked in had two saws exactly the same as yours. You will not get a better saw for heavy work than a supersaw.

Thanks elanjacobs, I'll try and rig something like that up for a guard. Got access to plenty of perspex at work.

Thanks Rowley, I will be cutting some decent sized hardwood so i will source another belt.

Lets have some pics of yours sorgi. I'm going to modify the bench its clamped to and make it into a permanent cutoff bench. Thinking of a replaceable insert for the square cut position and an adjustable flip stop on the fence for repetetive cuts. Looks like all the projects are on hold till i get this set up

As suggested earlier, get a pair of belts and match them in the shop, they can vary up to about 5mm in length, causing tension issues and slippage. Possibly why it only has one fitted present.

Thanks for the reminder malb. I did make a mental note to get two belts but it got shuffled to the bottom of the pile by all the brilliant ideas i had for the table.

Great score Tony, Junior deserves a beer for that one. Even if you don't put two belts on you need to pick up a spare, they always die in a Murphy moment.

I'll get two the same and keep the one on it for the spare. I will buy him a few but trust me, junior doesn't need additional beer from me. He pours plenty down all by himself. I will probably keep him in the will for a bit longer though. He's a good boy.
