I beg to differ. Dowels, because of the shape, lead to a horrible distribution of forces, leading to splits along the grain. I used to go into the cellar of our school when I was a youngster and look at the trashed chairs. 90% had problems with dowels.
I'd use bisquits any day (and I'd probably use a floating tenon a'la Festool domino if I had that much money to throw around)
