Default Carbatec 15" Thicknesser Manual and/or gear oil specification

    I’ve purchased a used thicknesser - CTJ-381X
Would be interested in changing the gearbox oil.
    Any information would be appreciated.

I was told by carbatec staff engine oil is fine. I asked what viscosity, they said anything lol. I put some 5w-30 which I already had and it seems to be OK.

Hi Skypig, The following quote is from the Grizzly manual for their G1021, a similar machine.

Gear Box - Gear box oil should be drained afterthe first 20 hours of operation. See Figure 40.Replace with 80W-90W gear oil. Inspect levelsperiodically and change yearly. Replace gear oilmore frequently under heavy use. Fill until oilreaches the top of the filler plug port for correct oillevel.

    Hope this helps Owen

I know it's a totally different league of machine, but the 40+ year old SCM at my old work got its oil changed once every never and it's still as indestructible as ever

    Thanks guys.
Found this: Can’t see a recommendation for oil but the 80w90 as per the grizzly would be a safe bet.

The pages are really clear, except for the parts list. (Where they might mention the oil)

It does say on page 8 to use EP oil which will be your 80w/90 gear oil. The EP will just be additives that are put in to prevent metal to metal contact if the oil breaks down.
