Carbatec 8 inch bench top jointer
Hi all,
My first post as a new member in these crazy times. I'm looking at purchasing a jointer. Never had one before (have used them only during my TAFE trade training as a Chippy, only when we could plead with the Cabinet Making teachers, years ago) so now I'm keen on trying my hand at some furinture making. Was looking at the bench top 8 inch model (10amp) with extendable table arms. Would these be a good starter to sink my teeth into some cabinetry/ furniture making work given these leaner times. Thanks in Advance,
Cheers,
Stu

Are you also considering getting a thicknesser/have one already?
If not you're better off putting your funds towards a thicky first as you can use these to joint boards with a sled.
Its much easier to joint a board than it is to thickness a board especially if you need multiple boards the same thickness.
In terms of that specific model you're talking about, i'm not too familar with, think its quite new? Looking at the images it doesn't look like a true spiral head so the benefits of having a spiral head are limited to mostly easier blade changes. However at the end of the day jointing a board isn't overly complicated process so any jointer that is properly set up will work.

That jointer still says "Coming Soon". Who knows how long "soon" will be with the current turmoil in China.
If you don't have a thicknesser & you do have room, you would be better getting a floor standing combination machine. You will likely be disappointed & frustrated with a benchtop jointer.
Both these are represented in QLD:
10" Woodman Combination Planer / Thicknesser with Shear Cut Helical Head - Gregory Machinery
W611 - PT-254S Planer & Thicknesser Combination - Spiral Cutter Head | Hare & Forbes Machineryhouse
If you need or want the mobility of benchtop machines, then the suggestion above is good. You may already have a thicknesser, but if not that should be your first purchase.
W815 - T-13S Bench Mount Thicknesser - Helical Head | Hare & Forbes Machineryhouse
Carbatec 13" Spiral Head Benchtop Thicknesser | Carbatec
Here are two jigs you could build to allow the thicky to act as a jointer (one face jointing & the other edge jointing)
