Default Carbatec CTJ-340 Thicknesser - Strange noises from gearing

Hi, my CTJ-340 is making very strange noises. Motor is good, chain drives and sprockets all ok but when running there are very strange mechanical/grinding noises coming from drive areas which I cannot isolate. All bearings are fine - there is no sloppiness anywhere.
This is a long shot I know, but has anyone else experienced anything like this. The machine has had very little use.
    regards, Neville

Have you lubed the feed roller bearings? The manual mentions nothing of this, but mine - bought around '05 - started making what may be similar odd noises in the drive train... and that's what fixed it.

    Temporarily.

Then the cutter pulley worked loose, melting the drive belt and chewing through the plastic side cover. By the time I got around to fixing it, a couple of years later - I run on bush time - it turned out the feed roller bearings have siezed. All of them. I might get around to fixing them in a year or six.

Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad machine and mine has seen many, many metres of hardwood pass through it. But it is marketed as a hobbyist machine for a reason.

Still, I heartily recommend lubing those bearings. It may not fix your particular problem, but it'll possibly avoid worse.

(And if you need spare parts... well... I may just strip mine. Or not. Depends on whether I'm in a mood for fixing once I start stripping...)
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

Thanks Skew - I've just spent a couple of hours pulling bits off and I think I may have isolated the noise to the cutter bar bearing at the chain drive end. When I'm a bit more organised, I'll strip the machine and try to replace the bearings. I have oiled the feed roller bearings and they spin quite freely.
    Appreciate your reply.

I had this too, right after I took the end cover off and replaced it, I realized as soon as I started up, the cover panel was too low, and was rubbing on the drive belt pulley. loosened the 3 little screws ,moved it up, and re tightened, Problem solved.

Call the team at Carbatec, it is their machine after all, they are still in business. It is an old machine, it may be time to upgrade.
