    Default Carbatec TJ-250P Combination Planer/Thicknesser

Does anyone have any experience with this unit?

I am unsure about the 1.5hp motor in it. I am a hobbyist, and work most often with Tasmanian Oak but would need it for harder woods down the track. Would 1.5hp be enough or should I really be going for a 3hp model?

    Thanks

    John

Hi John, I basically have the same machine which is a few years old but with the spiral head.
I think mine has a 2Hp motor but have to check. I am very happy with mine but found changing over to thicknessing mode a real pain. The Thicknessing table has to be wound down to at least 130mm when in surfacing mode.
To be honest I wouldn't go back to a straight knife machine at any price.

My Men's Shed has the earlier (but essentially identical) unit, we too have the helical head.

Not a bad machine, but I myself would never consider a knife blade machine after using a helical cutter; chalk and cheese.

With hardwood, the helical cutter just eats hardwood and leaves a very good surface, time after time after time.

You may wish to consider the H&F unit, which has a more powerful motor; 2.2kW and runs on a 10 Amp line.
