Carbatec TJ-X250C - looking for opinions
Carbatec 250mm Helical Head Thicknesser Jointer | Carbatec
I’ve been eyeing off this combination machine for a little while and I’m looking for any opinions on the machine before I pull the trigger. Did a search and could only find talk about the cheaper combo unit (where the table splits in two to switch modes).
This machine ticks a few boxes for me:
- Floor space is at a premium so a combo unit is ideal
- Helical cutter head for less noise. I am fairly close to neighbours and want to avoid their wrath
- Fence doesn’t need resetting when going from thicknesser to planer mode
It requires a 15A circuit which is not a problem for me.
Any owners of this machine hanging around here? What do you like and dislike? Are there any other machines I should be checking out?

I had one of the split table ones to build all the joinery and doors on a massive house here on the river. It was fine, a little underpowered but certainly enough for a garage type hobby user. It needed a bit of tuning to get up to my standards but was perfectly serviceable and whisper quiet. I would imagine this unit would be similar. I’d rate my one I had 8/10.

I have one of these — have been using it casually for a couple of months. I don't have enough experience to compare it with anything else, but I am happy with it so far, except the belt that operates the automatic feed seems to come off its pulley quite frequently. Would be interested to hear if you have the same issue and if so any thoughts on why. Otherwise very happy with it, and expect you will be too.

I’ve had this machine up and running for a couple of months now. Overall I’m very happy with it. It’s only seen light use so far, but hoping to bring some bigger projects to it later this year.
The in-feed and outfeed tables were perfectly parallel out of the box, with the outfeed table set in just the right place relative to the cutter head. So no adjustments were necessary there. Converting from jointer mode to planer mode doesn’t require any finagling with the fence or tables.
Speaking of converting from jointer to planer mode: my biggest annoyance with the device is the amount of cranking you have to do to raise/lower the planer bed switching modes. If the planer bed is any higher than about 100mm cut depth, you have to lower it in order to switch modes and then move the dust extraction hood over. I knew this going in, but it’s kind of annoying. The price of saving space I guess.
The helical cutter head is awesome. Super quiet in operation. In fact my dust collector is louder! Leaves a great finish most of the time, although I had a fair bit of tear out with some Blackwood recently. I’m putting that down to the species though.
Dust extraction with my 2HP dusty is quite average, but I put this down to the crappy ducting setup that I have atm. I have plans to modify the dusty as described by BobL elsewhere on this forum which should improve the situation.
In summary it’s a great unit and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it. I only wish I’d bought the larger 12” unit!
