Combination Planer Thicknesser
1st post, so here goes.....
I am getting back into woodworking after a long absence and I need a planer and a thicknesser. Are there any disadvantages in having a combination machine?

Think about having a pile of wood for a job.
Over the planer then through the thicknesser.
And then the couple of bits you forgot........
Nicer if there is no change over required between the steps

As I mentioned It All depends upon the amount of space you have, as there is No point buying individual machines if you haven't got the room.
Bob L is right with his disadvantages as well
Some Disadvantages
1) Cannot go from jointing to thicknessing as quickly as you would like
2) Tables and fences are usually a bit shorter
3) A bit more complicated so a bit more to go wrong
4) Only one person can use it at one time
But If your like most woodworkers then the small combination machines gives better value Because you only have one set of blades to buy, You usually get a 250 or 300mm wide planer and thicknesser instead of a 150mm or 200mm planer and a 300 mm thicknesser,
the cost of the blades are things to consider
Here is a list to consider
cost of blades, how many time you can sharpen them,
