Default Dewalt 700 Radial Arm Saw - blade change issues

    Hi all

I have an older-model Dewalt 700 (B&D) radial arm saw that came with a blade installed. I picked it up for 100 bucks and so I wasn't expecting much but aside from an overly sparky motor (needs new brushes, I guess), it's in pretty good shape.

I've come to change the blade, and there is no obvious way to stop/lock the motor spindle to remove the blade. When I try to loosen the nut on the outside of the blade, the whole spindle simply rotates while the blade is held in place. There's no way to add to the friction on the blade to spindle connection, as far as I can see, to help be get some torque on the nut.

In the past, I've used a range of these saws and typically when the blade is held stationary, there's enough friction to loosen the nut enough to free the blade, but not in this case. It may have something to do with the fact the nut is spaced by 5 standard zinc washers (I'm guessing the original spacer bearing was lost).

Does anyone have any advice for how I might try to loosen this nut? I don't have a compressor or I'd try a rattle gun, and I want to avoid a trip to the big green place for an expensive corded version just to try to free one nut.

    umm....help?

    Cheers.

Lower the arm down until it bites into the bench, place a block against the teeth and then loosen nut.
Alternatively, clamp 2 blocks of wood either side of the blade while they sit on the bench then loosen nut.
Try some penetrating oil first and let soak for 15min before trying to loosen the nut.
I assume the nut is threaded in the same direction as the blade rotation.
Then there is the no no of how to loosen a stubborn nut, using a ring spanner, give the spanner a good hit with a mallet, this usually works as a last resort.
The person who never made a mistake never made anything

    Cheers

Nut is a left-thread. Needs to turn same direction as blade to remove.

I had tried the biting into bench, blocks of wood either side, and also a screwdriver in the tooth gullet to stop rotation, without luck. What's been happening is the blade itself stays stationary, but the shaft spins on the collet/bushing. I've had no issues keeping the blade from moving . i guess you'd say the blade is slipping on the motor shaft, making undoing the nut more difficult.

In the end I freed it up - had to temporarily prevent the motor from rotating in its case to get some torque on the nut. Freed it up.

    Cheers for the thoughts!

I am not familiar with a 700 RAS but have a 740, similar to 1250, 770, 790 and other later model (dual badged DeWalt/B&D) units. Look at the saw arbour and you may well find that the end of the arbour has a hex head socket formed in it. I have original tool kit for my saw, and as well as the arbour nut spanner, it includes a long (approx 200mm) Allen key which fits in the socket. You can then work spanner and key to release or tighten the nut. From memory, I think it is 6mm, ut could measure it in daylight if it helps you obtain a suitable key.
I used to be an engineer, I'm not an engineer any more, but on the really good days I can remember when I was.

My DeWalt/Tatry DW125 has the same set up as Malb has described.

Hope it helps as the pix is from my manual which goes a little further with regards a stuck nut.

I have the DeWalt 720 and it takes the combination Allen key and spanner. Otherwise there is an incredibly helpful guy at Stanley/Dewalt, Martin ten Broek who seems to have an interest in RASs may be able to assist?
