Default DeWalt V Bosch V Ryobi SCMS

    Hi all!
I'm a new member to this forum, however I have been reading posts for a while now and I have learnt so much.

I am new to woodworking (6 month) and already I have a garage full of tool, i absolutely love it, I can't get enough of it. I purchased a Ozito sliding comound saw 2 months ago. I had trouble with the saw, so i took it back and replaced it, i have had the new saw for only 2 weeks now and it does the same thing (dust bag does not collect dust!) and its terrible inacurate.
So I have come to the conclusion that 1. I will never buy Ozito again and 2. I will purchase a new sliding compound saw (bunnings said they will happily take the Ozito and use it as credit). I have always been keen on the laser line guides for accurate cutting, hence I am liking the new Dewalt DW705 ($1150), however the Bosch GCM 12SD Professional ($999) seems like it's built to last. Thirdly the new Ryobi model number EMS2025SCL ($450) has the laser line which I am quite attracted to.

I dont mind spending the money if I am going to get a good quality tool that will last me years, rather than buying something that is half decent but will not last me as long.
I have just finished building a workbench, however I am going to start moving into more precise furniture such as making a bed frame, so the accuracy has to be there (thats why I am fan of the laser line).

So what do you recommend? should i pay the money and get the dewalt? or settle with bosch (heard it's a great tool) and perhaps attach a laser line to it? or perhaps the makita?

    Any input would be great!

    Cheers Andy !\

I think the adage "You get what you pay for" still applies with tools.

I doubt you will get a definitive answer about which of DeWalt, Makita, Bosch is the best, as forum members will all have their preference.

But I do know you got one thing right. Ozito is generally garbage if you want longevity and accuracy. Some of the Ozito are OK if you want to use it once or twice as a hobbyist or DIY'er a couple of times a year, because your expectations are not so high.

Do yourself a favour, buy any one of the DW, M or B that you have looked at. I too have looked at them and cannot see much of a difference. Ryobi is a mid cost machine and I am not impressed with their build quality. But they are better than Ozito in my opinion.

However for what it is worth I have a DeWalt and am very, very happy with mine.

Thanks for the reply. I think I am going to settle for the Makita LS1214L which has the laser line inbuilt, looks like a beauty! It's going to put me out of pocket a little but I believe it's a tool that will last me over a decade. I rather spend a little extra now then buying something a little cheaper and in 5 years I have to replace it!

    Cheers,
    Andy !

You have low expectations! I would hope that they last longer than that.

I have started buying older name brand machines e.g. Dewalt, Makita, Metabo and refurbishing them as needed rather than the new stuff. Even some of these brands have had to cut costs and get made in China these days, so have a look at the specifications label when purchasing even Makitas today.

I have a Makita 9 1/4" circular saw I bought nearly 30 years ago which is still in production (albeit in a modified form) which I have absolutely flogged and is still going. Replacement parts have been one set of brushes and a bearing in the motor. Made in Japan and will still be spinning in another 30 years I guess.

Good luck with your purchase. I am sure it will serve you well.

    hello,

I also have a Dewalt and it's great.
I've had it for over 5 years now.
The Makita looks great, have you bought it yet.
If not its on sale for 1079 on ebay,
and sydney tools have it for 1169.
They also have the Bosch for 934.

I havn't yet purchased the Makita. I have now came accross the same model, LS1214L however it has the cyclonic dust extraction and laser guide in the one unit, whereas I have only ever seen that model with the only laser guide. The cyclonic dust extraction system sounds great as I work mainly indoors and the convenience of not having to sweep as much saw dust at the completion of my work attracts me greatly.

But I don't know, I am now thinking of the dewalt mitre saw stand and the dewalt compound sliding saw in a combo? I dont know, I think i might search some threads on the stand to see what's been said about it.

But the makita LS1214L with the cyclonic dust extraction and the laser guide definetely sounds like the way to go, but then I think I also like the design of the Dewalt, I dont want to get buyers guilt so I am really going to look into it before I make my final decision.

Also i wonder if bunnings would price match and take the 10% off??

    Cheers
    Andy.

Just bought that makita model two weeks ago, great saw.

All the brand name saws you mentioned except ryobi seem of high quaility.

I chose Mak because finehomebuilding mag in the US rate it number 1.

The cyclone thing needs suction to perform better than a bag.

    A great saw.

    Good Luck

Just been to B and got some rude service as they tool man says 1214B & L are not current models. (He actually did not even know they existed and did not like being told they do... or did)
To price match you will need price on 2009 model 1214.(no B's or L's)
There current price on 1214 was $1049
Would love to here what you end up going for and price you get as I also am in the market for a 12" slider.

    Hey guys!
Just thought i'd let you know that I put a down payment on an Makita LS1214L. It comes in in 4 weeks, cant wait!
They gave me an demo at the shop, absolutely brilliant! It was suprisingly very quiet!

I think my next investment will be the makita circular saw plunge cut with the guide rails!

    Andy.
