yes as others have said, the spiral marketing for these things is collectively wrong, but that is now an old story and no vendor is really worse than anyone else.

If I had my time again, I'd still buy the Carbatec. Maybe I'd hold out for the Sherwood - but they're a sight unseen unit at this point, no real world evidence how they stack up. For me the benchtop style is ideal until such time I need a larger floor-standing unit, when I'd possibly be going all-out on helical head and perhaps over/under jointer.

Yes there is a lot of misinformation and straight BS out there and does take some time to work through, this forum has been invaluable in that respect.

I spent as my recent post in this forum weeks will tesitify weeks agonising over what to upgrade to from my Ryobi and ended up with the DW as there is an avalanche of positive reviews on this forum and elsewhere and could easily and quickly upgrade the cutter to a true Byrd Shelix which is due in a week or so. Total spend was around $1900.00 as was the benificiary of the bunnings price guarantee as was advertised more cheaply elsewhere.

I looked at both the DW and Carbatec .....and many others and decided on the DW based on the positive reviews which extend over many years as is tried and tested and able to be upgraded, and the more limited reviews on the Carbatec including on this forum which were generally positive but more limited.

Is a really complicated question as does depend on budget, how often you expect to use, the types of timber and length, what your lifetime expectancy is, and performance, is always better to invest a bit more up front if you can to get a better long term outcome if you can.

Ran some timber through the DW over the weekend and was super impressed.......and this was with the standard three blade cutter head, the Shelix will no doubt ramp this up, really have no idea how this compares to the Carbatec as have never used personally.

The long and the short is that they both appear to be quality units so dont think you will go wrong either way, if you assess the relative merits based on the standard units the spiral Carbatec might be the best option for now as it is cheaper and performs well and would expect that a true Helix option will become available in the not too distant future so you can always upgrade then.

    Good luck with it.

    Cheers,

    Rudy

    Hi Scorchio

Unless you have actually used one, it is difficult to understand how much quieter genuine spiral heads are, and how good that noise level is. In my opinion, it is worth paying for.

I did a lot of research about a year ago and decided that the de Walt was the best designed and built unit available and that with the spiral head then it was the best thicknesser under $5,000. Many have challenged me, but no one can convincingly argue for a particular model, so far.

That will be my next upgrade.

Here is a video expounding the benefits of spiral heads over straight cutters on the same machine.

YES as Graeme says, the Byrd Shelix Cutterhead on my Dewalt is quiet enough to have a conversation as the old Aussie hardwood goes through!
