The inner rear wall does not go to the bottom of the box, the gap being equal to the square area of the dust extractor pipe. If using a 150mm pipe then the area of that pipe needs to be the same as the gap and the pipe is attached to the plenum. Fire up the extractor and all the air rushes through the gap so any dust that is fired into the box falls to the gap and is drawn through it and into the extractor. The problem is most extractors just don't pull enough air and that is the important bit. BTW the back wall slopes away from the top box to the bottom so the dust hits it at an angle. The first link shows the idea in action

This one shows what a decent air flow does, notice how the dust actually changes direction due to the enormous air flow.

In the end if you want to build a good collector for a mitre saw then it needs strong air flow. This is the main reason so many hoods just do not function as they should. It has to be the hardest tool in the shed to collect dust from.

Good Stuff!!!. But the 100mm hole is installed in my collection box and with the dusty attached the problem is rough but successful. A deflecter will be fitted to the top for when the saw is 'out', and from observation that should be good enough.

I reckon that many that read this thread will benefit from all your knowledge and suggestions.

    A big thank you blokes

Thanks Chris, and BB for asking the question, that first link is perfect for my RAS.
I'll design it into the new table for the RAS.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

There are some really good photos around of the idea but I can't locate them at the moment, when I do I will post the links. There are two different versions of the idea and both work equally as well I am told. I am building the sloping version where the one on YT is a straight vertical back. The only reason I am building that one is due to the restricted space behind the saw.

Unfortunately you are fighting a losing battle using 100mm pipe as it just cannot flow enough air even with a fan that is big enough. The difference between 100 & 150mm has to be experienced to be believed. Do yourself a favour and get a piece of each and just look at the difference in size.

    Bottom plenum
Chop Saw Dust Hood #2: Top & Bottom of the Plenum Box Added - by BlankMan @ LumberJocks.com ~ woodworking community

Radial Arm Saw....something I found while doing this post that may be useful
    http://i635.photobucket.com/albums/u...n/100_0915.jpg

    The one I am building
show me your miter saw dust collection pics

The top and bottom links utilise a plenum, the top uses a multi 100mm pickup and the bottom a single 150mm pick up. There are better pictures of the bottom one as he took it further by running the dust chute via a flexible hose into the plenum. The only reason I chose that idea was lack of space otherwise the top one would work equally as well and possibly better. You can always mock it up in cardboard or coreflute to see how it works. Knock off a few real estate signs for coreflute.
