Default Felder AD741 Spiral Cutterblock Install

    Hi all,

Just thought I’d share a changeover I did recently from straight knives to a spiral cutter head on my 2009 Felder AD741.

The machine I purchased second hand earlier this year and has not skipped a beat but I was never truly happy with the finish on the straight knives or the noise.

It was challenging, but overall quite straight forward. I tried to find online resources for this particular model but couldn’t find anything useful.

My choice of cutter was a custom made block with 6 rows and 100 inserts total.

I took my time and spent a day to pull it all apart, half a day cleaning parts and changing to new bearings while I was there then put it all back together.

Here are some useful pointers I could add for this installation.

    - Take lots of photos and videos to refer back to when you forget where a part goes
    - Buy the right tools to help with installation. For me, this included snap ring pliers, a C wrench or 4 pin socket to open the bearing lock nuts, a bearing puller wrench to take out and seized bearings.
    - I used an ultrasonic cleaner with rust remover to bring the parts back to a squeaky clean state.
    - Triple check everything including all screws, heights, tensions on rollers, belts etc.

If you have a manual of your machine with a blow up of parts diagram, it would definitely help.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

You cannot end there! A before and after comparison of performance and noise is wanted.

    Great job!

    Thanks Derek!

I know you have experience with these Felder machines. Will do an extensive test over the weekend with some wide dense material and report back. I am keen to see if the motor can keep up when taking more than 1mm passes.

I’m using a medical grade 20L ultrasonic cleaner. I bought this second hand from a medical supplies company for around $200. It works amazing, can auto heat up to 60’c and I normally set 20 min cycles.

The cutterblock was made from a company in China. They specialise in cutters and making aftermarket blocks based on your specs. I had a friend who helped translate and contact the maker over a number of months back and forth. I measured out the old block, sent them the measurements and what angles I wanted on the inserts and also how many rows etc.
Took them a few weeks to make and another few weeks to box crate it and ship it over.

Cost overall was half of what I would pay for a Byrd or Sheartak well known brand. I would have gone this option but the wait is over 6 months and it would have been nearly half the cost of the machine purchase. I can’t compare to the major brands but I have had the silent power on an a3-31 for a number of years.

I am very happy with the overall machining and everything sounds balanced during spin and cut. They used quality German made knives which I hope will last. Will report back on cut quality over the weekend.

are the cutter inserts easy enough to come by?

be nice to send them the dimensions of the silent power head for you a3-31 so people like me with the older style can swap over.

I am keen to get the contact details of the supplier you used for that head. I have a couple of combos that I may convert and have been considering the Sheartak (but not the Byrd).
