New Gold Toy
Guess who is a happy camper.....
Took delivery of this shiny new gold toy today - a Powermatic PJ-882 8" Jointer.
I haven't had a chance to play with it yet, all I can tell you so far is - its heavy; really really heavy.
I'll take it for a spin tomorrow morning before heading off to the Sydney show.
Cheers,
Geoff

Half your luck! That's a very fine looking machine. Health to wear!
.
I know you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I'm not sure you realize that what you just read is not what I meant.

Unfortunately folks its not all good news.
The outfeed table is not flat - it has a pronounced dip lower about 150mm out from the cutter-head. The fence has a twist along its length.
The folks from Jet Australia are coming on Monday to pick it up. Hopefully there is another one in Aus that is straight and true.
Not such a happy camper after all

Hi ajw,
Yes & No - the folks at MWE & Jet were all very helpful. There was no hassle about taking the machine back. Jet picked it up after the Sydney show and MWE gave me a full refund. They were honourable folks and I would happily deal with them again in the future.
I suspect the PJ882 I had was just a bad one out of the bunch. Given the cost of the machine and the bad experience with the first one I wanted to be able to see any new machine before having it delivered but Jet only have stock in QLD.
Hopefully in the future Jet Australia will work out a way to have some Jet and Powermatic equipment in NSW so that potential customers can see and touch the gear before buying. I would still consider buying Powermatic again in the future but only if I could check it out first.
I purchased the Powermatic curved front mobile base from the US separately so I still have one bit of gear in the shed with a Powermatic logo... unfortunately its not gold
Cheers,
Geoff

Might be worth a cheap flight to Brisbane to check one out. The base you've purchased won't have many alternative uses...
Cheers,
ajw (who is looking forward to some shed time this weekend)
