    Default Hafco Woodmaster T-318

    Hi all,

I am looking at buying a thicknesser to dress some recycled timber that I have been collecting from renovating our house, it is mostly the hardwood they used for framing in the pre-pine era. I went to purchase the T-318 from Hare & Forbes the other day when I was asked "what are you machining with it?" I told him various types of hardwood including some redgum. He told me that he really wouldn't recommend that unit for what I was doing as they have sold a lot in the past and people have not been happy with them ,so they no longer recommend them for hardwood.

This put me off and I left with an empty boot, the unit he recommended was over $1500 which is well outside of my price range. What do you guys think? I know the T-318 is basically "bottom of the range" but for the amount of use it will get, and all care given to limiting the size of the cuts to a minimum I thought that it would suffice?

    Any input appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Adrian B.

maybe buy a cheap clunker and be willing to destroy it on your material.... seems the only alternative to the following:

    1. Spring for a commercial machine
    2. trawl the internet (eBay etc.) to locate the same as above, but for greatly reduced price (very possible)
    3. Pay someone who has a commercial machine to do it for you at a rate.

The machine will do the job, but slowly. Small cuts only. The other thing that will be a problem, but will be the same for the bigger machines, your blades will blunten very quickly. I have the model before that one, and have used it on a lot of hardwood, treated gently and it has done the job.
