    Default Hammer A3-31 Guard

The supplied guard often gets in the way of moving your body freely from infeed to outfeed. It is dangerously tempting just to remove the guard completely. I remember seeing this homemade guard somewhere on the net so I easily made one from scrap. I highly recommend it for all Hammer combo owners. As it is much shorter than the supplied guard it can cover exposed cutter head whilst not protruding out the side for most situations. Where only a very small area of cutter head or no cutter head needs to be exposed the original equipment guard can be used.

    Hi Mat

I do not get this. When jointing a wide board, the guard covers the full width of the bed. The board passes under the guard. No need to pull it back.

It is only when edge jointing that one pulls the guard back. If the fence remains at the far end, the opening is no more than an inch or two. If the fence is moved into the centre of the bed (so as not to over use one spot on the blade), then there is a reason for a shorter guard ... but this is a small part of the time use with this machine. I would rather put up with a slightly longer guard sticking out for a short period than swap back-and-forth between two guards. Can you explain more about the rationale for a shorter guard.

Photos to illustrate the guard and bed relationship ..

I think Mat means it pokes you in your chubby little belly when you retract it to process bigger bits of wood.

This is Felder's official solution (a reassuringly pricey option of course):

Yes mainly an issue with edge jointing but for me this can be up to 100mm. Also to share the wear I don’t always use the far end. If the fence comes forward the guard comes out further. Also for me I have the combo due to reduced space, I don’t have huge amounts of room to move. But most importantly I can move in a straight line from infeed to outfeed as I have been used to on previous jointers without the semicircular movement around the guard. More of a hassle with large boards.
There are also times when the thickness of the board does not allow the guard to stay overhead even jointing the first surface.
