    Default Jeffwood 702 Thicknesser Information

    G'day
I am looking for a instruction manual or information on a Jeffwood 702 thicknesser. The machine is missing the drive motor, pulley, and motor mounting arrangement. From what I can deduce he motor appears to have pivoted on a bracket. Any assistance on these details of these items would be appreciated.

    Thanks Hugh

    Thanks.
I have the same machine, only the paint is much worse, from living 'in the weather' for 25 years, because for a while that was the only place we had near the end of the 3 phase extension lead. (It's under a roof now!)
It's a brilliant machine-beats any tinny 'cheapo' GMC/Rypbi/Talon, though it's handy having a tinny machine for taking a whisker off a bit of pine.
I've taken 3mm cuts off 8"x3" ironbark & spitted gum with this, though you know it's working, and you'd better be sure the nails are out, or have a good relationshop with a sharpener!

I'll take some photos later today for you.
I won't guarantee it's right, but it works for us.

We have just 2 blades for this one.

P.S. earmuffs are an essential accessory.

P.S. sorry, it never came with instructions or a manual, either.
I remember buying it from a bloke at Woodford Qld. He'd had it for sale in the Trading Post, for 3 successive fortnights - no calls, then I rang up & said I'd take it. He'd dropped it from $800 to $650. That was still was a LOT of money for me back in 1988!
While I was there loading it, he had four calls from people wanting it!
It took us an hour to get it up & loaded into the back of our ute-slowly packed up on a pigsty arrangement or battens, jacking a corner at a time-that was tough. HIs little shed was too flimsy to support a block & tackle.

Lesson #1 always allow for a pulley block Dee or similar in the roof when designing your workshop!

    G'day Stewey

Thanks for the reply and info. You are right about the machine they certainly did not scrimp on the cast iron. It was on the first floor of the place where it was removed from and was a bit of a challenge to get it down the stairs without damaging it or the stairs. I have a hydraulic crane on my ute and it coped ok lifting it but i am glad I fitted a support under the tray to transfer most of the weight to the ground.

    Cheers Hugh

    Default Jeffwood thicknesser motor details

    Hope this helps!
The feed roller drive belts were originally those button-together vee-belts. When It finally broke & couldn't be shortened any more, I just put in whatever we had spare in the shed, onto it.

P.S. sorry for the disgraceful dirtiness it's in-but it's an indispensible machine, and now we do have a roof over it, it'll get some more care after we deal with some walls! The flooding last month made the place a bit of a mess though.
(I should post a query about out big thicknesser-we have a 1910 Jager, 20" model, that I'm trying to motorise the blades & feed rollers of.)

Jeepers, you carried it downstairs - that's be a suicide request if ever I saw one-I'd like to have seen the process on film!
Carpet & a lot of 1/2" rope tied to the bannister or out of the window & down to the bullbar of a truck across the street?

But then we all do odd things like that in the name of 'progress' re the workshop, don't we!

    G'day Stewey
thanks for the photo's their great. I think i have some machining to do. There was some plywood, a trolly, lots of slings and a chain block involved in the removal of the machine (and a couple of others). As you said what is conducted in the pursuit of workshop improvements sometimes does not need to documented.

    Thanks Hugh

Its not often that I venture out from the "ANTIQUE AND COLLECTABLE TOOLS AND MACHINES" area but I am very familiar with the little Jeffwood 702's,
I have had one for many years and they are a terrific little thicknesser.
Hugh, mine also came less motor, so all I did was sling two motors of the back of the machine, see pic's below.

And the last pic, something everyone should have.... a spare Jeffwood 702 ....

I have one of these as well. I had an Elu toy one that I would have to pull like mad to get timber out of the thicknesser. I wanted one that would not back away from a wide piece of hardwood. Well the Jeffwood can sure pull timber in do what it must and quite happily give you a nicely planed board.
I bought a new grease gun and thought that I would lube the Jeffwood.......I ended up having to pull the bearings out of it and clean the grease out that I had put in because it was too stiff to let the cutter bar spin.
Well it probably did need a change of grease.
What date would they have been made in? I am tipping 1950s. Am I in the ball park?
I also have a 12" Jointer. It would be twice the weight of the Jeffwood.
Great to see all the photos of the brutes at work, I was beginning to think I might have had an orphan
    Just do it!

    Kind regards Rod

Thanks for the thought. A couple of more detailed pictures of the belt guard would be helpful if possible.

Sorry those were all I had.
His machine is for sale (see classifieds in this forum) and these were to only ones I took.
So I probably will not be able to get anymore.

If you'd like to PM me I can give you his mobile number and he might take some for you.

    Lyle.
