    Default Jet JPT 10B Planer/Thicknesser

One of the local suppliers has a special running on a new model of planer, the Jet JPT 10B. It's going for around $700, and that's about what I'd have to pay for a second hand Elektra Beckum thicknesser.

I don't know anyone who has one, and the supplier is ten hours drive away, so I'm hoping someone here can tell me something about it, so that I can decide whether to buy one sight unseen before the special ends, or whether I should hold on a little until I can see on before spending.

Unfortunately, it's not a model that the local Jet Importer sells in Australia.

So, I had a look at the Jet USA web site and again came up blank. The closest model that Jet Tools USA have is the JJP-10BTOS, which looks awfully similar to photos I've seen of the JPT-10B. From reading the specs, I'd say that the main difference is that the Jet (JJP-10BTOS) USA version is designed for 110 Volt.

So I Google'd the JPT-10B, and the vast majority of hits for the Jet JPT-10B were on Russian and other Eastern European language web sites. There's a few Youtube videos where people are reviewing them, and again the majority of the vids seem to be in Eastern European languages. The JPT-10B seems to be the 220 volt version of the JJP-10BTOS (or vice versa - I don't know which one came first). I doesn't seem to be listed on any of the Jet Tools Western European or South African web sites.

The JPT-10B is listed on the Jet Tools Russia web site, and on a few other Jet Tools web sites in other Eastern European countries, so I suspect that it is a unit marketed specifically for the Eastern European markets.

As the owner of a 10 inch Jet Combo Planner Thicknesser (the JPT260M http://www.carbatec.com.au/jet-combo...jpt260m_c22237), I would have some reservations regarding the significantly smaller JPT10B. When the JPT260M is used to in planner mode (also referred to as Jointer mode by some people), the in-feed and out-feed tables are not very long - certainly not as long as a dedicated Planner (aka Jointer). The result is that when jointing longish boards, it can be difficult to get a perfectly straight edge due to the short tables. I've compensated for this by adding on shop-built MDF in-feed and out-feed extension tables. I suspect that you'd need to do the same thing when using the JPT-10B with it's even shorter in-feed and out-feed tables.

If the company you are considering purchasing this tool from is not the Authorised Jet Importer/Reseller for South Africa, be a little cautious. When major tool companies like Jet only market machinery in a limited range of countries, apart from the voltage differences, it can often be because a specific tool does not comply with the safety requirements for other countries. But - sensible operation, by someone who understands and mitigates the risks, can usually make the machine quite safe anyway.

Anyway - I'd be happy to learn how the JPT-10B goes if you decide to buy one.

    Thanks Roy.

it is being sold by the agents/importers, and is shown as a "new model". It might well be a new model world wide. I mostly do turning, so don't want to spend a lot of money on a planer for the amount of use I'll get from it, and I was hoping to find out how this model would compare with a second hand Elecktra Beckum, which is what it's competing with on price (at least while it's still on special).

I am not sure who the supplier is you are refering to but I think I can guess . As Roy has said it is not a globally marketed item by JET, I have seen the model at Hardware Centre and it looks ok and will work but if you need precision then something bigger may be more useful. HC do have the JPT-260 on special going for the equivalent of AUD1450, which is a really good price as it normally retails in the upper 2000 region in SA. With the escalating depreciation of the rand these things are going to leap in price with the next shipment.

Thanks John. It was actually Strand Hardware in PE, who are the importers. As far as I know, Hardware Centre sell them on consignment, and will almost certainly have them at the same (or similar) price. I don't really want to spend R15 000, because I'm not sure I'll get my money's worth out of it.
