    Default Jointer advice

Im looking to get a jointer.
Ive looked at full size units and benchtop units.
There is a Jet 6" long Bed JJ - 6CSX online for $800, or in the benchtop range ive looked at the carbatec 8" spiral head JN-BX200P
Since im working out of my garage the benchtop unit seems most logical as i can mount it to my bench and wheel the whole bench outside to use.

Would just like some thought as to the benchtop model, or should i make space get the Jet?

    Cheers
    Adam

Get the long bed machine. Benchtop tools, no.

The longer the jointer is the better really so I agree to avoid benchtop models.

I can not recommend enough to stay away from carbatec machines personally I don't have anything good to say about them from my personal experience.

If you do end up getting the carbatec 8" jointer just make sure the infeed and outfeed tables are machined flat.

Longer bed is the crucial element if you want straight timber coming out of your jointer. get the Jet, you rarely need jointer wider than 6 inch.

6"...NO, 3 blade cutter head...NO and constant blade sharpening so again NO. You will live to regret. Suggest at least an 8" with helical cutter head. My self I have a Leda 12" helical head long bed (had it since 2015) and it has performed excellently. I did have an 8" but the railway sleepers I was dressing were 9" wide so the 12" came into being.

Mate, he’s looking at a second hand machine for his garage for $500, not a full blown workshop weapon for $7500, big difference. There’s nothing wrong with s long bed 6” jointer, we had one as our primary machine in a big joinery shop for many years, it was fine.

I turned a set of TC sheartec inserts on my jointer just recently, and another set of inserts on my 'portable' thicknesser just a few days later. Sharpening a set of 3 blades is much faster I think.

That aside, I agree with everyone else, longer bed is better.

My very limited experience agrees with rod1949:
    Long bed
    Helical Carbide cutter head
Width is up to you - but “next size up”, isn’t just a good idea - it’s the law!

I'd love nothing more than drop a few grand even on a large machine, but unfortunately that ain't happening.
    But i get this gist!
No Benchtops! - Longer bed, wider the better, and helical head is ideal!!
    Thanks for everyone's thoughts!
