    Default Jointer Blade Setup

Hi all, I have a Tanner 6" Jointer and need to reset the blades. Is there an easy way to do this as I don't have a blade setting Jig or a manual explaining the correct procedure. Are the magnetic type jigs any good?
Any help will be greatly appreciated,Cheers Richie.

The magnetic ones are sensational, Carba-tec do them for $99 i think. Basically the idea is to get all the blades in line with the outfeed table. The lock nuts should be tightened in an alternating pattern from the centre to the end of the cutter block ie, a block with 5 bolts per blade would be tightened 3,2,4,1,5, this helps keep the internal stresses in the cutter block even. Also, all the blades should be done in the same pattern. With a 6" it's not so critical but larger cutter blocks should be done in this manner.

Thanks elanjacobs, will have to invest in one for sure. Have been doing some further checks and it looks like that the infeed and outfeed table drop away from the cutterhead so I will have to get the tables surfaced flat and at 90 deg to the fence, I guess one of the traps one has to look for in used machines, once again thanks for the reply, cheers Richie

the tables should have some adjustment in them. If you're planning on using the jigs, make sure you align the tables to the cutterblock first because the jigs reference from it.

i'd go about it in this order: align outfeed table to cutterblock, align infeed to outfeed, set knives, muck around with fence

Thanks again elanjacobs, The tables only have 3 screws on the side as wellas the main locking handle, I'm sure that the 3 screws only control the jib freeplay so will have to do further investigation, cheers richie.

    Hi Richie,
I have a jig you can borrow if you want.
I also have new blades which need fitting..we could do mine and learn the process.

    Hey Richie,

The fence should be adjustable to get it to 90 deg. I have a blade setu thingie, which I used to use on my 6" jointer. I now have a 12" & the best way I have found to set it up is with a couple of those 90deg Welders Magnets.

First I set the out feed table just above the cutter head.
Set the infeed table level with the outfeed
Place the blade in place & set the magnets across the 2 tables.
Tighten up the bolts that hold the blades per earlier post, from the centre out.

This sets te top of the blade with the out feed table

Then I lowerer the infeed table about 1/2mm.

    Even with a 12" jointer & a 3hp motor, I rarely take off more than 1/2mm in a pass.

Then I used the magnets to set the fence to 90deg.

as long as you tables are flat, you should be able to shim them level. Unless your machine has been thorugh a fire, assuming it is cast Iron, it should be flat & you should not need to get it machined. See this thread, https://www.woodworkforums.com/f40/pi...-cheap-126233/

This was all done at home with basic tools except I needed a press to press out a shaft. No machining req.
The fact remains, that 97% of all statistics are made up, yet 87% of the population think they are real.

Thanks Ticky and Conwood, Alas I am doomed to the renovation of home first before I even contemplate looking at my poor jointer. I have got a blade set up tool from carbatec and have had the tables surfaced as they were out. After looking at your jointer Ticky I see I will have to pull my finger out and tart the old girl up a bit Anyway thanks heaps for the info and If you're not in too much of a hurry Conwood maybe we could work something out, Cheers for now Richie
