    Default Jointer/thicknesser Combo - Suggestions?

My next machine purchase is to be a jointer/thicknesser combo machine.

I need the combo due to space constraints. It would also need to be made mobile so I can move it around the garage (car is outside when I am enjoying myself making saw dust).

I am looking for advice on a suitable machine. I have seen them at Carbatec and Hare & Forbes in Brisbane. Has anyone had experience with these or have any other suggestions (polite ones preferred).

    Thanks in advance
    Geoff

If I were in the market for a combo I would go for the new Jet machine.

Check out the http://www.toolking.com/jet_708475.aspx site it has information on them.

You haven't given a budget so it's a little hard to advise definitely. I still haven't sold my machine if you are interested. I'm a little more negotiable on the price than I was.

Thank you Woodcutta. I will check out local suppliers of Jet. Nothing about that machine on their web sites.

Thanks Mark. I would prefer to buy new because I have not used either a thick. or jointer before so warranty / back up are important for me. The price you are looking for would be at the very top of what I could justify paying.
Will keep this thread posted of how things go.

Then you can't afford the Jet. It is over $3000. As I said, I am considerably negotiable on that price...

As for warranty, this thing is German built. I honestly can't see it breaking down. Anyway, I'm not going to try and "sell" you on the machine. For one thing I am a hopeless salesman.

Warranty is not the big deal you might think with second hand machinery. I have bought second hand machinery and saved a considerable amount of money without problems.

You misunderstood - I didn't say that I could not afford it but that I could not justify paying that much.

    Geoffo,

Just been through the exact same delima. The Jet is a great machine but i could also not justify the price. If I won Lotto or actually got to spend more time in the shed I would have one in a second. I ended up buying a ML392 from timbercon. There is a lot of fors and against for the machine on this forum, so have a read. It cost me $1000 which was a third of the Jet. The only small issue I have is with the locking mechanism on the thicknesser table which I need to investigate. Apart from that it produces a good result for the price of the machine. I also got hold of the DVD that Gumby started and there is some good adive on that also. Go to the end of that thread and see who has a copy to send to you.

    Hopes this helps.

    Default My pick for portable

    geofo,
I have owned a Hitachi for years. Recently went out and bought knives for it and find they still make the thing!
I think it's the RL12 (it's out in the shop)
Almost twenty years ago it cost $1000 now it costs $1100.
The jointer part comes off with two knurled knobs and one can carry it about.
Two tools one motor and I have yet to change the brushes even!
I'm not a hobbyist - this tool has worked hard for a long time.

Yep, the old Hitachi units are tough as old boots
There's loads of them kicking around here, definately hard to kill.(probably the reason they are still tooled up to make parts and blades for them)
They make a light version and a heavy cast iron version. I'd be having a closer look at one of those heavy version Hitachi's..... and of course, if I had plenty of paper, I'd be going to Felder

    Hello Rightendup and Underused
Sounds great - have checked out all 17 pages of Hitachi Aust products list but no combo. They have a thicknesser. Will talk to local distributor on Monday
I am also in the market for dust extraction and saw that Hitachi has a portable dust extractor that would suit my home needs - Triton 2000 workcentre and Triton router under my home made table.
    Thanks for the suggestions

Saw a boxed, so couldn't look too much, Ozito jointer/thicknesser in the local Bunnings last week. Asked the price and I think they said $349.

I have had a Carbatec AW106PT since Christmas and I love it.

Straight out of the box it performed brilliantly. I went through the routine that is in another post some where here to set it up but the only thing I had to do was set the height of the outfeed table in jointing mode
    Cheers,

If I was in the market for a combo machine and in Brisbane, I'd be buying Mark's combo. Elektra-Beckum, the makers of Metabo are hard to go past, they're quality gear. I would've had one except my BIL grabbed my Dad's before I could.

It hadn't been used for about 4 years, a bit gunked up with not being used, a clean and it was like new.
I make things, I just take a long time.
