Kity 638 Planer Table Adjustment

Hi All,

I've had this Kity 638 combination planer/thicknesser for a while now but haven't given it much serious use until lately (thicknesser isn't operational, only the planer). I don't have a manual for this machine, and my research to find one hasn't been particularly fruitful to date. The tables are not co-planar and without a manual I'm having a hard time working out how to properly adjust. I've tried to attach some photos below to assist.

Being a combination machine, both the tables lift up by hinging around a point on one side. On this hinge side there are twist handles for each table that allow the table level to slide up and down. On the non-hinge side, each table sits on two adjustable bolt heads with locking nuts. I'm assuming that by adjusting the height of the bolts I can effectively adjust the side to side tilt of the tables around the hinge point. I'm having trouble understanding how I would adjust the front to back (long direction) angle of the table.

On a side note, would anyone happen to have a manual or know of someone with one? Lastly, I'd like to sort out a guard, does anyone have any thoughts on how I might go about achieving this (European style)? My metal fabrication skills are quite limited.

From the looks of the photos the table front to back adjustment is factory set and the locked into position with the two roll pins next to the two bolts on the side. Probably repeated on the other side.

The only way to adjust the tilt is to remove the pins, loosen the bolts slightly, adjust the tilt, lock the bolts and then drill the pin holes to a larger size (to suit the next size up pin) and insert new pins.

The only hard part is removing the pins, if they cannot be punched right thru they cannot be drilled out as they are hardened steel.

Thanks for that. I was worried that might be the answer. Although as you note it shouldn't be too bad if they can be punched right through. I would have thought if it was factory set they would have got it spot on. I'll see if I can do some micro adjustments of the side to side tilt and the height of the tables to get it closer. I'm pretty sure when I had the straight edge on there last it was out from front to back.

A Euro style guard should be fairly easy to fabricate from aluminium extrusions and bolts. It basically stays in place by gravity.
These twin bolt holes on the outfeed table are the mounting points.

If you are lucky, spare parts from a Sheppach should fit your machine.

While not a real Kity, the Axminister Trade (planer/thicknesser) machines seem to be direct copies of the Kity. At worst you might need to modify the blade guard with a hacksaw and drill one hole so it all fitted

while it's for a different machine, the principle adjustments should still apply

Yes I think so. I think they'll more likely affect side to side tilt around the hinge point. But also because the hinge point can be raised and lowered there might be some impact on front to back adjustment. Thanks.
