Question A little bit of trouble with thicknesser

I recently bought a nice Metabo thicknesser but am having a wee bit of trouble with it.

I was running a bit of merbau decking through it today and it didn't want to feed all the way through by itself - when it stopped I had to keep giving it a push.

The blades are sharp, the feed rollers were turning, the in & outfeed tables are clean, and I was only taking small cuts because I know merbau is a hard timber, but it would not co-operate.

The 2 possible reasons I can come up with are:
    1) The rollers need cleaning
    2) The timber was too smooth and slippery for the rollers to get traction.

    Anyone had this problem before?

If the problem is the rollers need to be cleaned what do I clean them with? If it is the smooth slippery timber what can I do?

    Kev

If it has rubber rollers, they need to be wiped with a damp rag periodically, especially working with denser timbers, they sort of get a bit burnished and dont grip. Put some furniture wax, talcum or specially prepared stuffage from carbatec made for slippery tables on the table.

I had one peice of timber I had to spray with water to raise the grain so it would feed through.

Did you get the manual with it. It sounds to me as though the feed rollers are not putting enough weight on the timber. Is there any adjustment between the blades and the rollers. Are the rollers spring loaded and can you put more tension on the springs.

Obviously the rollers have to be lower than the blades otherwise they wont grip the tmber so i think this is where the problem most probably is.

    Hope this helps.
    regards

    Like Donna said,

First step is to wax or polish the tables and see if that helps. It works for me when wood won't pull through.

Always try the simple fix first!

Ok, that's a job for tomorrow.

I'll let you know how it goes. I'll also read the manual to check on the roller adjustment.

Yep, the roller cleaning and table wax did the job. Used a wet green kitchen scourer to clean the rollers and furniture polish on the tables - beautiful - works good too.

Did check on the roller spring pressure etc but no adjustment necessary.

    Thanks for your tips.

Hey Kev, Dont tell anyone (your wife?) you know how to wax or use furniture polish or they will keep you so busy you will never get time to get down to the shed!

    Glad its fixed,

Yeah, if my wife ever logged onto this forum she might learn a couple things I haven't told her yet, like a few little purchases I've made....shhhh.

I hope that the furniture polish that you used was silicone free

Would the small amount left after you polished it off be enough to cause a problem? And what is the problem with it?
