Cheers Neil, this brings it closer to $1800.00 so for me is now a done deal

Thanks no I hadn't, but it appears the same as the Hare & Forbes, with 2 sided cutters.
Had a look at this one too and is not a true helix as far as I tell

All done, the Dewalt is sitting on my work bench ready to go with the 3 blades and packet of spares and will have a Byrd Shellix in a fortnight, decided to go the Byrd Shelix as the Woodcraft one is a Chinese knock off which apparantly performs very well however has slightly different blades to the Byrd and am concerned about procuring relacement parts down the track. The Byrd on Amazon was only $80.00 more so am comfortable with that. Got the Bunnings discount and still managed to get the redemption !. Has been an agonising process and am now looking forward to churning through some timber tomorrow

Thanks all and Neil especially for all of the feedback, has certainly made the decision making process easier.

    Cheers,

    Rudy

Here are a few images of the set up, made a bed for the machine with a deck both sides, bit of minor snipe on the test run with the Turpentine shown so will need some minor adjustment to ensure all is level. Other than that the test run was mind blowing with the 3 blade and cannot wait to see the results with the Shelix !.

Dam Blackwoods, they put their price back up to the same as the others, so I can't use your trick. At least you saved some $'s

Yeah well, same ownership, they obviously don't want us using one arm of their extensive enterprise to screw the other.

Well I bit the bullet, cancelled the Timbercon order, then bought the Dewalt. Got it home and unpacked it to find a set of blades. So I thought you must have to install them. I started pulling it all apart to install them only to find it already had a set of blades installed, the other set were a spare set. So now I have a Dewalt with 2 brand new sets of blades.

Start to wonder if I need the Shelix, certainly not for a while anyway, unless I sell the other blades.

Had exactly the same experience Neil !, opened up the box and contents and also found the blades and thought you must be kidding...I need to install the blades only to realise was a spare set so now have the the installed blades, a spare set, and the Shelix...have come this far and think I will keep the originals as spares just in case. Will install the Shelix as am sure will be everything I expected and is too late anyway as it is unpacked and sitting on my workbench, must say that the installed blades did a pretty fine job on my test runs so either way you will not be disappointed.

    Cheers,

    Rudy

My only other surprise was it is almost all plastic. If I have another fire there will be nothing left .

No indeed/outfeed tables, but I was expecting that, and dam my old Jet ones don't fit. I've ordered new ones off Amazon but got caught. Logged in to Aus Amazon where price was $87 that I assumed was Aus$'s, but the Aussie site had linked into the US site, so no they were US$'s.

There is a lot of plastic Neil however am fairly certain the odds of another fire are slim, feel you are unlikely to repeat you recent antics again !.

Was a bit concerned about the Dewalt feed tables as they dont look great structurally and wasn't convinced they wouldn't flex and give a level feed based on my own Ryobi experience so built my own bed as per the photos I posted which seems to be working okay, have had no issues with snipe based on running a few 1000mm lengths through however the real test will be when I ramp things up.

There are two different size Shelix heads for the Dewalt. One is OEM size and one is slightly smaller in diameter than the original blade unit to make it easier to install.
Which one did you buy? If the smaller one then you will need to take that into account when using the front thickness scale.

Hate to say it but this one was my second. The first being a lot worse and I lost the whole shed. Welding a ripper snipper motor on my son's pushbike outside the shed. Some molten metal must have bounced down the driveway into a pile of wood under my bench. I continued working in the shed for another 2 hours but no signs. Went inside showered, had dinner and even watched a movie on TV, but the TV and power then went out some 6 hours after finishing the welding. Went outside to check the power box assuming a blackout to see a big red glow coming from the backyard. Took 2 years to rebuild and restore everything with insurance from that one.

The ones from my old JET were really good and I was hoping the Dewalt's would be similar. I can't afford the room of permanent tables so need a fold up system. I could have made adaptors for the old JET ones, but in Aus$'s the Dewalt's ones were cheaper to just buy, at double being US$'s I wish I hadn't been so quick to order. If they are flimsy I'll make adaptors for the JET ones and sell the Dewalt ones

Nah not interested in pursuing the JET, I only bought it originally because I got the deluxe secondhand at $250 with stand and 2HP dusty

Yeh I'm definitely going for the new Timbercon model, this one https://www.timbecon.com.au/13in-del...al-spiral-head. Considering the cutters have 4 sides and can be touched up with a diamond hone (I do this all the time for my woodturning chisels TC tips) they lasts heaps longer than the Carbatec or H&F models.

At this stage I've ordered this Timbercon one and I'll just have to see how long it takes to actually get here.
I have had my A3-31 Hammer with spiral head for about 5 years and never turned the cutters unless one got chipped and that happened twice from memory and I have more spare cutters than I will ever use unless a major hit happens.
