That sounds pretty good to me. 85dB or greater is when ear protection is recommended although it doesn't hurt to use it for less that this.

I will try to put one on the mobile phone and see if there is any difference tomorrow.

The thing that used to make my generic 15" thicky scream was if I adjusted the plastic chip scraper too close to the blades (which would have been after a knife sharpen), first time I turn it on and I have an air raid siren I know ahhh, chip scraper too close, it only needs to be 1 or 2mm too close to make it scream, I say used to cos now I have a helical head and is now not an issue.

Wow thanks so much everyone!
Some great places to start - needed an excuse to swap out the blades!
Im out of the shed for a little while due to work, but Ill get a variety of sound measurements and report back to see what the culprit is.
Cheers, Steve

My Catbatec 15" thicknesser - motor in cabinet below runs at 79dB at infeed and 76dB at outfeed with no timber being planed.
Will test when I feed some in next time.
My Triton big router mounted in a router table also runs at 79dB no cutting.
Used mobile phone app for what it is worth.

Ive got a Triton 15" thicknesser, and boy howdy is it loud! I haven't tested it with an app. But I wouldn't dare use it with good quality earmuffs.

Hi all. Getting under the bonnet of the thicknesser today.
I have all but confirmed the belts are the problem, very loose and huge amounts of vibration and whipping from them. Which in turn hits the cabinet and gets loud. Ill sort the belts and cross my fingers

Well i have found what i assume to be the issue. Keyway for the drive pulley is incredibly worn, causing play and vibration and a new headache for me.
Off to call a machinist
