Thread: Makita LS1214 vs LS1212

If you look at the images and specifications listed on the links you have listed, the 1214 has a different base and a bigger cutting capacity

I got the LS1214B.

I'm trying to make the same decision: LS 1212 or LS1214? The price difference depends upon where you shop. If you shop around they can both be had for roughly the same price.

My investigations have shown the following:

LS1212:
Slightly older design
Stock clamps to table outriders (angle of saw can be adjusted with the work in place)
(usually??) supplied with a higher tooth count blade
Will cut sharper mitres: up to 60 degrees (right only)
slightly lower cutting capacity
Narrower bench
Can read (and adjust) mitre angle with stock in place


LS1214:
Slightly newer design
Not as sharp mitres: mitres up to 45 degrees left and right
slightly higher cutting capacity
Stock bolts to table(stock needs to be released and removed to alter mitre angle.)
Broader bench, supporting larger sized stock
Must have table clear to adjust and read mitre angle

I can't make up my mind

I'm also trying to find information on a suitable portable table for the saw.

I have a 1214. I have also used a 1212. There is not much difference between the two, so I'm sure you will be happy with either. You mentioned on the 1212 you could adjust the mitre with the workpiece on the table - how many times do you need to do this? If the workpiece is clamped against the fence then you can't adjust the mitre regardless of the model.

My recollection is that the table is a little larger / more supportive on the 1214.

I was confused by the slightly smaller capacity but higher price tag (as far as I've found in WA and online--an extra $90 - $150) with the LS1212. Thanks Cliff for the links as well--Google let me down

I was initially concerned with the table design of the 1214 but it sounds like a non-issue for most users. The 60 deg range and toothier blade with the 1212 appeal but so does the larger base on the 1214... hmmmmm, decisions!

At this point, unless I can find the 1212 for ~$990 (the best price I've found on the 1214), I'm leaning towards the 1214.

Would anyone recommend against shipping a product like this interstate to WA if I were to order online?

Here. That model is a bit newer than mine, if you ring them rather than doing a web order, you will find that you can often get a bit more off the price.

The price I paid included freight from Sydney to Malanda & it was still $120 cheaper than I could buy it anywhere up here including Cairns.

Oops, That one above is the LS1214L a bit more looking around & I have found the LS1214B & an LS1212

I made my decision and went with the LS1214 this afternoon.

My decision went along these lines:

The larger table is more of a cabinetmaker/furnituremaker feature. It allows more secure anchoring of the work.

I actually prefer the way the 1214 mitres are adjusted. It felt better to me and seemed very clear. The way the 1212 does the job is still good but it is slightly more awkward to see the detents. This, of course, is provided that the right side of the table is clear of stock. I really don't see that I'll be worried about the mitre indicator being obscured, if there are situations where I have to move the wood to see the angle, then it's a few extra seconds.

The slightly greater cutting capacity is likely to be handy in a situation where I don't want to have to set up a triton or use a tablesaw. It should handle most of the timber I use.

Although the 1212 cuts right hand mitres 15 degrees greater I just don't think I'll be cutting that many sharp mitres and if I do then I'll be happy to set up a jig (on a triton or tablesaw) for it.

The LS1214 feels slightly more stable.

I bought it from Just Tools in South Melbourne (which is where I prefer to purchase my tools from), they currently have a special on the 1214. Although the ~$100 difference in price had no influence on my decision.

I have no affiliation with them, no personal friends working there or anything. It's just the case that they have been great to deal with for a number of things I have bought. Although they are not the cheapest, they are competitive on price and any small dollar differences are more than made up for with great service, a fantastic range of products and real knowledge of their stock.

And I too went with the 1214. $991 plus $20 shipping to Perth but worth every cent--the saw is nice and it's reasonably quiet too by comparison with some of the cheaper SCMSs I've used recently. I was worried the thing migth get damaged in transit and while the packing wasn't brilliant the saw is cutting square right out of the box. I have found the slide action a little stiff when pushing off but I'm hoping that'll ease over time and I can probably lube up the rails with something slippery if necessary.

I'm a happy man!

Hi...after the feedback in this forum, I picked up an LS1214 yesterday...It is a LOT quieter than my existing GMC SCMS and is cutting square straight out of the box...

FYI (although it's probably too late now..I forgot my password and had it reset so couldn't post yesterday unfortunately), I picked this up at the big "B" for $713...price match M10 with the 20% off plus an additional 10%.

Well, I own the LS1214 and I love it. It ain't just because of its huge power, accuracy, and design. The reason that made my purchase choice so easy, was the table. It's huge. In fact I think it's the biggest of all sliding miter saws and it really comes in handy.

What store locations M10 do they sell the Makita 1214? I am jealous, what a bargain you drove them to. Lucky!!!!! The best I can do now with a Makita at Bnngsis $970ish ouch nowhere near your throwaway price.
