Default New motor for Old Jointer

Sometime ago I was given an old jointer, it has (roughly) a 150mm cutter, three blades and a 950mm table. The original motor is big, bulky and very heavy which needs to be spun by hand to get going. I want to reduce the size of the frame as it takes up a lot of valuble floor space and get another motor.

Was wondering if somebody could recommend a good modern (smaller) sized motor that would be suffice for this machine eg HP etc. Even thinking of going the old washing machine motor option.

A washing machine motot would not even turn the cutter head, I would be looking at 1.5hp -2hp for a small machine H&F have some motors that would suit

I think I should have been a bit clearer, I will need to get a new/second hand motor but I was seeking advice on HP recommended RPM's etc.

    Default Motor for planer

    Hi Squirrel,

I presume you mean a cutter head 150mm wide and a combined table length of 950 mm. You will get away with a 1 HP or 1 1/2 HP SP motor quite comfortably for that machine for light cuts and sharp knives. You will need a proper capacitance start motor. Buy a local brand and buy new would be my advice. About $350. You need to set this planer up with a magnetic drop out switch as well for fundamental safety reasons: about $150. Have a think about it: a good motor and a good switch plus wiring it together is getting towards half the cost of buying something new that's going to be just one HELL of a lot better.

If you talk to smoeone who rewinds/rebulds motors they will be able to help and give you some advice. If you look in he phone book under electric motors or electric motors and generator repirs you should be able to find one.
