Moulder cutter limiters - necessary???
I'm expecting my Hammer C3-31 to turn up in the next week or two so I've been shopping around for a universal cutter head for the spindle moulder. Nobody has anything decent in stock in Oz (that I can find!) so I was looking at US sites and noticed none of their systems use limiters - even the CMT ones that are sold with limiters elsewhere on the planet.
So the situation is this - I can have a CMT set without limiters here in a week or two to meet the Hammer, OR, I wait until xmas until I can get an overpriced set with limiters from a local business
And the question is, why do Europe, the UK and us use limiters but not the Yanks????
... and does anyone know where I can get a good quality universal cutterhead with 30mm bore in Oz???

Moulder cutter limiters - necessary???
Limiters are essential if you don't have a power feed.
Feeding an unlimited cutter by hand is very dangerous and can lead to big kickbacks and flying bits of metal.
I have experienced exactly this when a client brought his cutters to me to make some moldings, I was still finding bits weeks later. I had a power feed and was glad I did.
30mm is standard in Europe. Checkout eBay or amazon, etc. a set from uk will be here in a week and exchange rate is good. My first molder set was from hammer.

Whatever the cutterhead, I'm afraid I'd always use a powerfeed with a spindle moulder. Definitely the scariest machine in the workshop IMHO.....

Thanks for the info guys. I wasn't planning on getting a powerfeed so I'd better hold out for a cutterhead with limiters. Might have to grab one of the cheapies from Hafco for the time being - was holding out for the CMT though with it's M2 blades and the UK stuff is more expensive than ours even before postage.

Just for interest, did you consider the felder/hammer cutterblocks?. When I priced them last I felt they were reasonably competive compared to the likes of CMT but this was just going from web prices.

Was just looking at them in the Felder cattledog the other day! I've actually got a Hammer C3-31 on order and knowing their pricing regime, I haven't been game to ask for a price on the cutterblocks . . . and by the time the Hammer gets here it will be 6 months from the order date - don't want to wait that long for the cutters as well!!! . . but I will ask
