Powermatic Thicknesser Supplier Rant
I was offered a Powermatic thicknesser today which if looks are anything to go by has never had a stick of timber through it and from all accounts this is exactly the situation. To decide if the price being asked was a fair one I went hunting for a retail price as comparison with mixed results. Gregory Machinery still list Powermatic on their website but the link goes nowhere so I rang them and was told they are no longer the Ozzy distributor. Hallo, why is there still a link on your website????
I was told by Gregory's, reluctantly it seemed, that Carbatec were now handling the brand so I got into their website and found no Powermatic but was assured when I rang by the lady who professed to being new in the job that she thought they did indeed sell the brand even though she couldn't find it on their website either. She found a reference somewhere on their system but could not give me more than very vague details. How in the hell can you sell something that is not visible to the buyer??
This is not a specific CT rant as we have been there and done that but a rant on poor information or no information as well as out of date info by prominent suppliers in this country. They then claim they are suffering from buyers going OS. BTW I still haven't been able to get a price and wonder if PM in the US know how their product is being handled in this country. I guess I will have to gamble that it is a fair thing if I decide to buy it.CHRIS

No way I would buy a new one, overpriced and over hyped and exactly the same as at least one other brand which is way cheaper. That was not really my point though, I was P****D off that the past and present retailers can't get their act together and present the correct information, any information would be nice.

Yep no wonder you are P****D off. You are just an honest bloke who wants to buy a second hand machine and cant decide if it is worth the money asking. Just to be sure you want to be able to jump on the phone and waste the time of the staff at a bricks and mortar store, hoping they will gladly give you the information that you need for free, despite you having no intention what so ever of actually making a purchase from them. I think the new term for this might be showrooming!
The first dealer that you called no longer stock the item you just want to price check. How inconsiderate. The second dealer, who has yet to launch the machine that you just want to price check, get a roast because they are not ready to sell or provide information on something before they officially launch the product line. Its perhaps lucky that you never intended to buy as you would have had a fit that the second dealer didn't have the stock before they sold it to you.
Good luck with your thicknesser! Now proudly sponsored by Binford Tools. Be sure to check out the Binford 6100 - available now at any good tool retailer.

Well, to be fair, Chris would have just used a website to get the price if he could have. I mean, that's all he wanted to know from the OP.

The Powermatic ???.
Hi Chris,
Not sure of the Model or No. but The Melton Mens Shed, Vic. have one, & if memory serves me it was $6000. Beautiful Machine & oh oh so quiet, under 85 Decibels, I believe.
Not sure if that helps, & you could find them on the AMSA, Website.Regards,
issatree.

All I wanted was pricing information from the website. You have never done that when wanting to buy something new or used? In fact when I did get to speak to someone from CT who rang me back he was more than happy to have a chat when I was honest enough to explain what I was after. In fact he wanted to talk about it a lot more than and I thought he would and helped me arrive at a decision. Points to him for trying to help me and I made sure he knew I appreciated it. If you are honest with people it is amazing what is forthcoming I have found. People used to ring me with no intention to buy a cyclone just to garner information so they could build their own and I always helped, in fact it was always a pleasure to help someone protect themselves from dust.

Thanks for taking the time to reply Issatree, much appreciated. As a bit of info they are the same as the Jet and if spares are required they come from Jet so I used that as a comparison. it has a spiral blade head and a digital readout which the Jet does not and I picked it up this morning.

Removing thicknesser from trailer. This is a repeat of the way we removed the saw yesterday and that worked OK so I figured that if you are on a good thing then stick to it. We dragged it off the trailer on the pallet onto a rolling steel frame that used to be under my TS.

...if that's the 15HH, nice, I have one myself.
Hope you had some sort of ramp for it to slide down onto your rolling base

It is the 15S unfortunately but beggars can't be choosers. The previous owner bought and did not use it and traded it on another machine. We didn't need a ramp, just dragged it backwards until it just reached the tipping point and then when it tipped kept on pulling until the rear of the pallet was about to come off. After that we got a floor jack and raised the rear of the pallet off the trailer, moved the trailer and lowered it onto the rolling frame. The day before I had picked up my new Felder slider and removed it the same way.
