    Default Rebating on the jointer

Pardon me, I'm having a seniors moment or a brain fart since I haven't done this for so long. I want to make a 6mmx150mm rebate in a board and I thought the simplest way to do this was across the jointer. The way my Luna works, it looks like this must be done in a single pass, which seems a tad over optimistic. If subsequent passes are conducted, the board sits at an angle on the infeed table, resting on the lip of the rebate. Is anybody elses jointer like this? There's no way I could offset the blades to extend beyond the edge of the infeed table, that's just far too much hanging out of the drum.
(I just recalled working this out last time I did it but that must have been 2 years ago)
    Cheers

depending on how the guard is mounted and whether your infeed and outfeed tables are the same width, you should be able to run the lip along the infeed table

Hi Ian, thanks for the reply. Checked with another Luna owner and it's the same on his, it must be done in one pass. There is a rebate on the outfeed on which the uncut part of the rebate may ride, the problem is that the infeed table is wider than the blade, so if you do another pass the uncut part will sit on the infeed table so the board is at an angle. It might be alright for soft Swedish timber, but I'd hate to try and run a 6mm rebate in our woods.

    Cheers

    it shouldn't be a problem.
the motor can remove 3mm on a full width single pass, so should have the grunt to remove 6mm over a width of 100 mm or so

    I don't
I have access to a 260mm Kitty and get to use a 400mm SCM (?) at Tech.
my thinking is if a machine has the grunt to remove 2–3mm on a full width pass, the same grunt should easily remove 6mm over the width of a typical rebate

Hi Rowley. I have the W59 machine. Think we have determined that rebating needs to be done in one pass with this machine but happy to hear what you have to say too...

    Default rebate on jointer

    Hi Michael,
I doubt your machine will handle the cut in one pass, I
have been using all types of machines for over 50 years.
The best way to handle your problem is to take the whole depth in one cut
but only take part of the width about 40mm at a time. The only problem is
you have to support the work piece to keep it level. If you have access to
email. email me on [email protected] and I will run you through the
    steps to do the job.

Rowley, my apologies! I forgot about this thread. I see what you're saying, it makes a lot of sense to nibble horizontally by moving the fence rather than one pass. Thanks, I'll remember that next time...

    Default Rebating on jointer

    Michael.
The thing you must do is to make up a sprip of scrap the thickness equal to the depth of the rebate.Make this about 100mm longer than the in feed table , fix a block to the undersiode that willl pull against the end of the table Position the strip against the fence as you make a series of passes getting wider each time. The strip holds up the side wich has been rebated on eairler passes. You may have to use an out borad table to support the work piece if it is a wide board. Use the morticeing atachment with a packer on it to bring up the height to infeed table height.
