Replacement blade for Makita compound saw
I am after a good quality blade to replace the original blade on my son's Makita LS1212 sliding compound saw. I ruined the blade, didn't notice some metal under the material I was cutting. In a hurry as usual
Original blade is part no. A-85472, for wood, 60 teeth, 305x 2.6 x 25.4
Should I go for more teeth to get really smooth crosscuts?
Can anyone please recommend some good saw companies that seel this type of blade?
Are there specific bevel and hook angles that I should be looking for in this sort of saw blade?
regards,
Jill

your local Trade tools or Glenfords will help you there, I always grab the blue makita blade for my makita saws, good quality.

JillB,
I recently needed to replace my blade on the 12in Makita.
I was lucky enough to purchase 2 Freud blades from Northwood Tools (Colin). These were below half price and are still available. They are in the catalogue as:
RALP60M006 305mm 96T Combo $ 216.40 $ 108.20
Notice that the blades have 96 teeth and the reduced price is $108.20. (Buy 2)
The package will probably be marked but the saw is brand new. people on the Forum swear by freud blades and my friend at Home hardware would not even offer me a blue Makita blade when he saw the quality.
The website is:

Feel free to contact me for further info.

thanks Carrie Pine. Does this RALP60M006 305mm 96T Combo saw blade have a negative rake angle? I would imagine that would be required for sliding compound mitre table saw, so that the work piece is forced down and against the back of the table ?
I cannot find the specs for it anywhere.
Just checked the original Makita blade - it has quite a positive rake angle on it !!! So muich for theory

Jill

Others please feel free to join the discussion:
Just opened my 2005/6 catalogue and has the blade listed at $182.49. The picture given is not the correct set up of the teeth. The teeth are exactly the same as the makita blue and the old makita before the blue. The cooling slots on the makita are straight lines perpedicular to a tangent on the circumfrence (have i lost you?)- well you have one anyway so have a look. The cooling/expansion slots on the freud are like question marks all the way around.
I'm not on this guy's payroll.
Will try and download more specs.

JillB,
I use Freud blades in my LS1212. The one that is negative rake I use for cutting aluminium. Also have an IRWIN when butchering recycled timber. (Cheap so I don't care).
Freud LU11MSSEC3 from MWE.

Lessons learnt -damaged SCMS blade
There are lessons to be learnt here. I was actually cutting 4 inch PVC pipe for a dust extraction system I am making, and was cutting off the belled expansion piece at the end of the pipe. The little vent from another project was on the work surface of the SCMS, but I never noticed it. The tapered section at the end of the pipe fitted nicely over it.
The lessons:
1. Don't rush
2. Never leave stuff on the saw table
3. Look for stuff on the saw table before putting your workpiece there
4. Get really good lighting around the saw work surface
5. At the end of a long day, give it away before mistakes are made

Jill

Thanks to Carrie Pine, I was able to get the last blade in stock at Northwood Tools, at the 50% reduced price. The 96 Teeth instead of 60 Teeth should go well for making smooth crosscuts.
Many thanks to all for your comments - looks like Freud blades are the way to go, based on the number of satisfied customers in this forum

Jill

Ouch!!
Just a small postscript, I put the new blade on after much fiddling around with getting the guard back on. I then set up a small test piece, only to find the fence is bent out of alignment due to the foce of the sawblade pushing the vent against it in my stupid accident. The whole centre of the alloy fence has been pushed back, bent about 10mm
That is really going to hurt the wallet.
Does anyone have any suggestions for suppliers of reasonably priced parts for a Makita LS1212?
regards,
Jill
