Retrofit shelix cutter in 6" jet jointer
Hi Guys,
I am looking to replace the 3 knife head with a retrofit shelix head from woodcraft on my 6" jet jointer.
I am keen to hear from people who has done this or something similar and whether its worth the effort and money.
Thanks!
Nick

Pobably would be, presume the cutterblock is around $450 plus postage. I have never retro-fitted a machine but ditched my straight knife planers years ago an have 10x8 combo machine and 15" thicknesser. The improved finish, longevity of cutters and ease of changeover make spiral heads invaluable to me.

You'll need a good straight edge to re-set your outfeed table. Remove the inserts from the new cutter head to avoid damaging them or yourself during installation.
Innovations are those useful things that, by dint of chance, manage to survive the stupidity and destructive tendencies inherent in human nature.

One thing to be wary of is the alignment of the head to the tables. On a straight knife head you can compensate for misalignment by just setting the knives to the outfeed table, on an insert head they are fixed in place so if one end is lower you'd need to shim either the tables or the bearing housing; cut up soft drink cans make for good shims. The one at work was out by 0.1mm over 410mm width and it never became a huge issue so we just left it alone, but it is something that should at least be checked.
The other big thing is bearings; don't reuse the old ones and don't buy cheap replacements. Spend the extra few dollars for something good like SKF and you won't have to worry about them dying early. Self-aligning bearings are also a good idea (if you can get them in the size you need) as they mean you'll have a bit of leeway with bolting the housings back down.
