Red face Retrofitting a spiral cutter to my old Jet 16" thicknesser

    Hi All

Has anyone out there done the retrofit to a 16" Jet thicknesser?

Checked Youtube, lots of other brands, and I get the general idea but would bet good if someone has done it on a Jet and has some hints to offer.

    Thanks

    Iwilliam

Welcome to the forum. I’m sure someone will be along to give some advice.

Did it with a 15" Jet that had the motor below the stand, wasn't too bad. Find the manual for your Thicknesser and it should have exploded diagrams in the back, I picked those apart to figure out disassembly.

You will need to disassemble the gearbox so I would recommend ordering new seals, oil etc now so you don't hit a delay at install. Give me a shout if you hit a snag.

Did you order it from Wizard? The installation instructions included weren't too bad, I just needed the exploded diagram to cross reference.

Edit: just remembered a tip. Put some damned tape over the blades while you're installing the head. Once I took the shrink wrap off I cut my hands to shreds bumping into the cutters.

Get some new bearings as well (from a proper name brand, not an ebay special).

Haha how did I forget this!

Yep any bearing I removed was replaced with NSK Japan bearings of the appropriate size. They should be listed in your parts diagram at the back of the manual.

Thanks to all who have responded.

Eventually got the old cutter shaft out and have managed to get the new one in , nearly !

The oil seal and bearing has pushed out, and it looks like I'll have to pull it all out again to replace the probably squashed oil seal, and maybe another bearing.

Mini disaster, due to not putting bearing locking bolt back. Dumb !
