The straight edged inserts definitely won't fit correctly as they need to seat up against the radiused pocket in the head and the Sherwood inserts have a unique angle on the cutting edge which doesn't match any other makes. You can get the correct inserts from here. The original inserts are already carbide but who knows what grade they are.

No they definitely won't fit - I didn't think they would but it was a desperate hope. When the square blade is placed in the recess the hole and the screw thread don't line up.
On another note (and perhaps I should have posted this separately) the machine was not thicknessing evenly across the full width - that is, the cut was not parallel - out by about 0.6mm across the full width. The user manual that came with the machine was useless but fortunately I found that Grizzly have almost the identical machine and that also has a user manual that genuinely is fantastic. It can be found here: https://cdn0.grizzly.com/manuals/g0940_m.pdf.
Mind you I shouldn't have to make that adjustment on a brand new machine. And because the supplied manual was useless I could easily have assumed that the machine was substandard.
