Default Scheppach hms260 - no fence

I'm a bit of a novice and looking for some advice. I've found a decent thickness jointer combination machine which from what I've read is pretty decent the only problem is it is missing the fence.

Living in TAS second hand woodworking equipment is a rarity and as I've never even used a jointer before I want to know if it's even worth looking at it as its a 3 hour return journey to view it. Fences are essential for joining? Maybe I can retrofit one? The asking price is $260.

    Any advice is appreciated!

Scrap that, they have found the fence. I'm going to check it out this weekend. If anyone the same thicknesser/jointer or has used one I would love to know you're experience with it.

The fence is essential for jointing. You run one of the wide face of a board over the jointer first, then use that face to reference against the fence to get a 90 degree edge to that face. You could make your own fence but if you're lacking the equipment/skill/tools to measure flat and straight, you'll mess up every board that you put through the jointer. Which kind of defeats the purpose of having one. You also need to make sure the beds are in plane with no twist when the infeed is raised to the same height as the outfeed, and that the top of the blades are in line with the outfeed table. There are quite a few youtube videos on setting up a jointer, have a look and check all these things before you buy.

A bit of a google on the HMS260 throws up quite a few people having issues setting up the tables or having twisted tables and eventually just not using the jointing capablity. If the seller stored the fence away and forgot about it, they've probably done the same and just use it as a thicknesser.
