    Default SCM L'Invincibile S7

Some photos of my SCM L'Invincibile S7, delivered in August 2022 setup in Sep but never had time to take photos because the shop was constantly busy churning out stuff, here is my shop after end of year clean up, last time its this clean was 18 months ago....

yes I have to open my garage door to plane anything longer than 1.6m

As usual I checked out Felder before went ahead with SCM.

and here is a video of the shop

    Bespoke furniture

this is more of a timber process room, timber get machined here. there is a 10m2 spray booth/finishing room, and a 10m2 timber storage not photographed.

the cutter head is made by MBM, here is the link of it.

    Planer shaft - MBM

I dont know the difference between helical/spiral... I can get down to taking off 0.1mm on the SCM with no infeed roller mark. not on the AD951

A spiral head has the inserts square to the cut; you get the noise reduction, but it behaves basically like a straight knife in all other aspects

A true helical head has the inserts at an angle to the cut, so you get a slicing action; it's particularly useful for reducing tearout in reversing/figured grain

My Martin TP 300 planer /thicknesser has a similar head made by MBM in Italy. I was initially a little dubious of the finish quality, till I ran the machine. I have run fibbleback Blackwood through mine with zero tear out. I am now of the opinion that heads that cut in shear are great for machines that are a little underpowered.

For commercial level work, step treads and the like, I can finish straight off the machine. Nil sanding.

    cheers

same findings here, I like and prefer the finish on the MBM cutter block than Felder's Silentpower, I have a Shelix cutter head on my Delta jointer. the difference in finish is night and day (with SCM on feeding rate at 10m/min)

because the volume of work I do, I dont necessarily feed every piece of timber in correctly, ie feeding directgion with grain direction. however most of the time I get away with it with SCM/MBM but with Felder if I feed incorreclty, it will 100% show.

I think it maybe to do with the pneumatic roller pressure applied? I am still toying with it.

    Default Helical Cutterhead

I've just bought a 24" Wadkin from the 1960/70's which has been fitted with a helical cutterhead, when I get it home from NSW I will compare it to my 20" spiral cutterhead which I have no complaints about the finish, but just wanted to have the ability to do wider boards and also I am trying to get a full family of Wadkin machines.
