Thread: seeking advice on Carbatec jointer

Hi All,Carbatec finally offered to replace the complete machine and they assemble and adjust it in their workshop first (this is a great offer as I asked only for the infeed table to be fixed/replaced). It'll arrive tomorrow and I'm curious about what I'll get.

That is great news Andy, hope you will post a quick user review of your new Jointer once you have run your first batch of timber over it.
Good to hear a company actually doing what they should without quibbling? if product they are selling is faulty it is their priority to fix problem and look after customer.
By doing this Andy, 1, company in China will hopefully now know there is a problem with not checking products before sending to Australia, and fix.
2, Carbetec is now aware of this issue and will hopefully check machines more closely before selling.
3, you are making it easier for next customer, cause if you let it go, they just keep doing it.

I got the tolerances for the jointer tables from Carbatec yesterday:


1.Flatness of the infeed/outfeed tables separately


* A: Length ≦ 0.20mm
* B.Diagonal ≦ 0.20mm
* C.Width ≦ 0.10mm


2. Co-Planer Level of Infeed to Outfeed Tables.
a) Set infeed level to outfeed table,check for parallel of infeed to
outfeed table ≦0.25mm.
b) lower infeed table 5mm,with block gauge, check parallel of infeed to
outfeed table≦0.25mm


3. Flatness of the fence:


* A Length ≦0.30mm
* B.Diagonal ≦0.30mm
* C Width ≦ 0.12mm


Actually I think these tolerances are quite generous, but I was working only with German machines so far and I never bothered to measure them because everything comes out perfectly, so I can't really compare. However it would be interesting to compare these values with the ones of similar products available in Australia.

You could probably halve the number and move the decimal point one spot to the left on the German machines.

That is a very big tolerance, 8 thou (.2 mm) on single table, I would of thought 2 thou (.05 mm) at the most considering machines only job is to get stock flat.
I will have to rethink Carbatec machine.

I got the new jointer yesterday and fortunately it is a lot better. It has the same issue though, the in-feed table is bent upwards a little. I measured 0.04mm on the left and 0.15mm on the right. The good thing is that this is not really noticeable; the results are good. I'm still surprised that there are such huge tolerances for that kind of machine. I know nothing about the carbatec jointer, I did visit Hare and Forbes when I was in Brisbane and found the quality of some of thier gear wanting. I figure built to a price.

I orignally looked at a Powermatic 8" jointer it looked great however I stepped away as Carbatec was the importer and they stopped selling Powermatic so warrantly claims would have been a real Pita.

Depending on your $$$ I will say after a lot of ground work I went for a Laguna 12". This was more than what our Men Shed needed but this is a beast of a machine and it came out DEAD flat and co planner off the cuff. Our machine came with a spiral head and I'm amazed how quite the machine is. The timber comes out fantastic and dead flat, we are very pleased with this jointer. Of course if we can keep people away from moving the outfeed table there should never be an issue .

I dare say Laguna would have a 6 and 8 inch version, so if you are in the hunt for a jointer well worth checking them out.
