Sherwood 16” thicknesser issues
Hi, Hoping for some help on this one
I have a Sherwood 16” Spiral head thicknesser from Timbecon which was working fine for the first 18months but now has a number of issues I’m having difficulty fixing.
1. Gearbox started leaking about 6months ago through the bottom seal - Still waiting on a fix from Timbecon on this
2. Slow speed slips into Neutral when in use - Still waiting on a fix from Timbecon on this
3. Belts are flapping around when under load and banging against the guard and making the machine vibrate severely - Bought new v-belts fromTimbecon and installed them, still doing it. I have adjusted the belts into every conceivable adjustment through the adjustment bolts but it still does it. I have checked all screws, nuts and bolts and even checked the cutter head for movement but it all seems fine.
Any help is appreciated
Cheers

Timbecon currently claim all Sherwood thicknessers have a 5 year warranty so it would seem your best bet is Timbecon.

Warranty claim, ring them every day until you get a resolution, or start proceedings with the Department of Fair Trading. Just think, if it was a car, and it was in warranty,as stated, you would take it back to the dealer and make them fix it, this should be no different. Make them sort it out, it’s their job and required by law.

Issue number 2 is probably the biggest concern and will warrant a new gearbox so definitely get them to sort it out.
Issue 3 wonder if they gave you the wrong belts? WHen you installed the new belts was it tensioned properly? if so then you've got some dud belts/incorrect ones.
Issue 1 seems quite common but is easily fixed, however given your machine is still new i'd get them to send out a tech to take a look/fix the issues.

HI Tuckers,
Were you able to resolve your issues ?, was in the Timbecon Coburg store just yesterday looking at the 16 inch and am sorely tempted, am currently working with the bunnings Ryobe benchtop which is fine for small jobs but am getting a bit more serious so am looking to upgrade, am also looking at the Carbatec which is a bit more expensive so am unsure which way to go.
Cheers,
Rudy

hi Rudy
yes sorted it out with Timbecon, new gearbox coming in about 2 weeks which will sort out the leaking and slipping and I fixed the belt banging issues with new belts and a bit of time setting up the right tension.
I looked at carbatec as well but the Sherwood one is that little bit wider and is a great machine, I use mine nearly every day in my business
cheers

Am thinking any thicknesser will do a fair bit of damage if you are careless enough , may come down to how many fingers you lose !
Yes is a big jump for sure, am getting a bit more serious about the whole business these days and dont want to buy another unit and kick myself down the track for not going the Full Monty. Bought the Ryobi a few years ago to play around with on some small projects which worked okay however am now looking to run some serious widths and lengths of some pretty old hardwoods I have been scavenging and want to be sure I have the right machine to do the job. The woodworking bug has bitten as I'm sure most on this forum understand the consequences of first hand !
