Default Sherwood 20" Thicknesser - pulley to cutter shaft problem

Has anyone got some good suggestions as to how to mount the pulley onto the cutter shaft of a Sherwood 20"thicknesser?

You may have solved this if you have changed over to a spiral head cutter recently.

I have cracked one pulley already and the replacement is not far behind.

Have made sure of the following:
Sanded shaft with 400 grit to make sure it's smooth
Made sure inside of pulley is smooth
Used 4lb hammer with piece of thick pine between pulley and hammer to hammer it on.

Incredibly slow progress - 4 solid sessions of a couple of hours each to only get half the pulley on with a hairline crack already.

Does anyone heat the pulley? Any other suggestions or help? It's one of the last steps so incredibly frustrating to be at this for the last few weeks and not being able to work on a single piece of wood.

If it doesn’t fit on with hand pressure, it’s too small, get it bored out, never hit any machine parts with hammers or anything else, ever.

RB is right on the money, pulleys should slide on with minimal effort, the key way or grub screw is what holds it on the shaft

What is the diameter of the shaft you are tying to fit the pulley on to? Could it be that one is metric and the other is imperial as some diameters are very close and without the correct measuring gear you won't know. 16mm and 5/8" cannot be seen as different without measuring and the same goes for 19mm and 3/4" which are even closer.
As others have said, there should be no need to use excessive force to fit a pulley for this purpose.

Ok - well this is a lesson learnt and the conclusion I was beginning to come to was that something is wrong. I will go and measure the diameters. Thank you so much for taking the time to reply.

Thank you - slightly red faced here but this will save me many hours of persisting with the same error.

You’d do well to have the shaft checked to see if it’s not bent also, that amount of whacking with a 4pounder may have moved something else as well.

Am I reading that right? You belted on a pulley with a 4lb hammer for a total of 8 hours?

I agree with riverbuilder- get the shaft (and bearings) checked.

Don't think it should be that tight. When i fit bearings to a spiral cutter head i froze the spiral cutter head overnight and then the bearing slid on just fine. Once the cutter head warmed back up it was nice and snug.

I just changed the cutter block in my Jointer this week and the pulley had to be taken off with a puller but not a lot of force was required. Could have been knocked off with a hammer and drift but I would prefer to pull it off. The bearings were the same and to refit them to the new block I just heated the inners with a paint stripping gun and they slid on beautifully and were tapped at the end to ensure they were hard up against the shoulder. The pulley was just a very light tap on the new shaft.

How did you end up getting on with this unit? I presume you didn’t get my reply to your PM as there was no response.
