    Default Spindle Moulder

    Hey all,

Considering purchasing a spindle moulder. What should I look for? Just using it for table top edges. Can the same be done with large router bits on a variable speed router, or should I invest in a dedicated machine? Also, what would it cost to have new cutters made for a spindle moudler?

    Cheers.

    Wad,
a spindle moulder is probably not the right tool to buy just for shaping table edges. Think of a very large, heavy router permanenetly fixed to a cast iron router table, with enough power to throw bits of timber (or incorrectly fixed cutters) across the workshop and embed them in brick walls. You'd be better off starting with a good variable speed router and than a router table. If after a while you find that you are running up quantities of mouldings, or other heavy repetitive work then a spindle moulder (and power feed) may be justified.
