You can hear when they are dulled. Same as with straight knives. And then it’s easy to feel the used edge and feel an unused one and compare.

The way I was taught to check for a sharp TC cutter was to draw the back of your thumbnail across the edge at right angles to the cutting edge. If it is sharp the action, which simulates that of a scraper, will create a small and tiny shaving. Of course this is probably totally unacceptable in today's world of H & S.
The downside is that while I know when my blades are sharp, my thumbnails are not the prettiest in the world, but there again they never were a picture and I am probably past caring anyhow as my aspirations to becoming a hand model vanished before the turn of the century.
