Talon thicknesser-drive belt melted ! Need replacement.
Heads up guys- check the drive belt on your Talon thickenesser occasionally.
After twenty minutes of thickenessing yesterday the machine made a few funny noises then the blades stopped spinning. After investigation I found that the drive belt from the motor to the blade assembly had melted !!!
Now to try find a replacement belt- any suggestions ? about 41 cm in circumference and 1cm wide. Has a few rubber splines on the inside of the belt.
Fitting a new belt may also be a challenge as it looks like the positions of the motor and blade assemblies are fixed- there seems to be no ability to slacken off the assemblies to allow a new belt to be slipped into place (but further investigation is needed).
Cheers

Someone else with the same name. And you spell it right!
Apparently the talon is the same as one hare and forbes sell. Try them for spares.I'm just a startled bunny in the headlights of life. L.J. Young.

Great tip. Bearings that are too hot = melted belt! That might explain it.
I noticed that the pulley/bearing assembly on the end of the planer assembly is quite "wobbly". Would partly explain how noisy the machine is- the wobbly metal parts clatter at high speed.
Will see if i can replace, repack etc the bearings while I have the machine in pieces.
Cheers

Located replacements belt (hopefully)
Thanks for the tips gents. I just went over to Timbecon and picked up a belt for the Sherwood MB-1933 machine. Looks like it will fit the Talon machine fine. Belt cost $15. I rang Hare and Forbes and they wanted $38 plus postage for the belt from the T300 machine! I needed the belt today so I thought $15 sounded fair.
Timbecon bloke gave some good advice. He reckons a melting drive belt is usually caused by blunt blades. The motor wants to spin at one speed and the blade unit wants to spin at a slower speed due to the blunt blades having trouble getting through the timber. This causes slippage in the belt and loads of heat. End result is a melted belt.
He also reckons fitting belt is best done by getting two splines on the inside of the belt onto the pulleys then gradually crawling it over while turning the pulleys. Now to see if theory works !
Cheers

replacement belt and blades for talon thicknesser
Sorry havent had a chance to reply- my wife and I just had our first baby so woodworking had to sit idle for a while !
I bought the replacement belt at Timbecon. Havent fitted it yet but am 99% sure it will fit. Looks identical to the old melted belt. The part was a replacement for the Sherwood MB-1933 thicknesser. There are two belts available so you need to be sure you buy the right one. I will post the part number and a photo in the next few days.
The guy who helped me at Timbecon is pretty confident that Sherwood blades will fit but that I should bring in the old blades to compare them against the new Sherwood ones. Again, I will do that in a few days time and report back.
Cheers

Gday there, I have an operating/user manual - is that what you are after ? Has some servicing tips (changing belts etc) but is not a full service manual. Let me know. Cheers

Talon Thicknesser manual
Here we go. Enjoy.
It is very similar to one of the Sherwood models at Timbecon- probably identical in fact. So replacement blades for that Sherwood machine will probably fit the Talon unit.
The GMC PT330 looks very similar too.
It was made by Jenn Feng in Taiwan.
If you ever have a warranty problem call Ben Hall, Brand Manager at Stanley Works Pty Ltd. He looked after me.
Cheers
