Thicknesser
I am in the market for a thicknesser and I have been plowing through previous posts and looking in the limited amount of wood working shops here in Canberra.I want to spend about $1200-$1500. I have a reasonable set up and I'm finding more and more that I need a thicknesser. The T&WW show will be here in Sept. Have any of you purchased a thicknesser from there previously? if so, what was it? how much? and was it a good buy. What should i know before taking the plunge.
Thicknesser/ jointer? is the combo a good option or is it better to have a designated machine. All advise welcome.
Cheers
Ben

G'day Ben,
I got my JET tablsaw through this mob who delivered down to Canberra, don't have the JET thicknesser but they are a good brand in your price range.

Hi Ben,
I bought an ML392 from Timbecon a few years ago. After a year (little shed time), I found the size of the bed too short for the planks I use, so I sold it (to another Canberra person) and got an 8" longbed jointer. It was a good unit though. I haven't added a new big thicknesser though, going with a small H&F one at the moment. It's going OK, and it's easier on the room than a big CT/HF unit.
I found CT often has better quality in its machines, but you have to buy it from Sydney/Melb/Bris since Canberra doesn't ever seem to have anything on sale. Then you have the transport. Even so, my jointer was cheaper from Melb .

If you're space short, or want a really good price on an induction-motor thicknesser and jointer, it's hard to go past the ML392. However, do a search and note what others have found (and you may or may not). You won't get a cheaper 10" jointer I think!
But I was (am) moving 3-5m long 200x50's, and the new(ish) 8" longbed CT is much easier on jointing, although it is easier to use the 10" width when using 8" timber .
I'd suggest an 8" jointer if you're doing separate machines.

Hi Ben, Have a look at the Triton TPT15 thicknesser / moulder, it seems to get fairly good reviews. Cheers Greg

Just bought a 15" Carbatec jointer - very good machine and so far out of the box (about 10 hours) excellent! Needs a 15A supply.
