    Default Thicknesser gearbox leaking

I have the timbecon 20" thicknesser. Its the same as the carbatec and powermatic and other chinese brands. The gearbox has started leaking.

Heres how it looks with the cover off

Anyone have experience with this? What do you think is leaking?

From what I understand, Timbecon only stock the version with the straight knives. I had to wait for them to bring a technician in to change the cutter head to the spiral. Maybe the guy damaged a seal? Its only been just over 1 year!

If still under warranty, take it back.

    It's leaking oil.

Behind the black casing there are 2 bearings and then an oil seal, it's almost certainly a problem with the oil seal.

There is no reason to access the gearbox to change out a cutter head, that'll be chain driven from the gearbox.

    That could be a problem.

Even if not under official warranty, it should be covered by statutory warranty. The expected life of such a product is well over 1 year. Of course, they might argue that seals are consumables and therefore not covered anyway...

I have the 16” version with the factory spiral head and its been leaking for about a year, i also have the slow speed gear slipping into neutral when using.

Now i have an issue with the v-belts banging against the guard when under load, replaced belts and still doing it.....do you have these similar issues?

I've got a thicknesser thats around 20 years old, i acquired it from the previous owners some 4 years ago. Its been leaking in a similar manner to what you describe from the day it moved in. When it arrived home i gave it a full once over and including aligning the table, knives and complete oil change. I checked oil levels the other day, thinking it must be low with the leaking by now. Nope still nearly a full tank of oil.

My point being unless you notice a fairly decent puddle on the floor, the amount of leaking is negligible and i'll just keep an eye on it. Otherwise i just wipe up the oil residue on the machine and be done with it.

Having said all that if your machine is new and you plan on keeping it for a while i'm sure a replacement seal isn't that much or apply some gasket sealant around it and you should be good to go.
