Thicknesser - Holy-Tek vs Carba-tec
I've been looking at purchasing a thicknesser. I am divided between the Holy-Tek CT38 2hp (Taiwanese) and a Carba-Tec CTJ-380 (Chinese). Here in NZ W.R.Jacks offer the Holy-Tek made in Taiwan while Carba-Tec Auckland offer the CTJ-380. Both are the same price give or take a few dollars. The difficulty is I cannot see the Carba-Tec because I live in Christchurch. Can someone advise me on what might be the better machine. Does one go for the Taiwanse made machine or risk the Chinese? Another concern is the power drawn with the 3hp as opposed to the 2hp. Is there an issue with other electronic appliances in family home (particularly computers)? Is 2hp enough or 3ph better?
Thanks Gray

Hi,
Which did you buy. I'm in a similar position between buying Carba Tec or Holytek. I'm actually looking at 21' Bandsaw, 15' thicknesser and a 8' jointer. In memory of my Dad "Jas the Master Craftsman"

think you'll find these machines are all the same i have a 20" jet & 20" trade tools brand these are both the same apart from color and 1is single ph and the other is 3 ph.
the 3 ph wins i can plain 4mm off a 300 mm hardwood plank in one pass!
the single ph will not do this.

Jacks is a 3hp single phase
The 381mm thicknesser from Jacks is the 3hp Single phase
The also have the 400mm or 508 in the Single phase. I haven't seen anything that looked good anywhere that cuts less than the 381 model.
My opinion would be to stay away from anything less than 3hp or 380 width of cut as they all seem quite light when you get into that range.
