Thread: Thicknesser maintenance

Generally just general machine maintenance e.g. oil/grease. cleaning, adjustment of rollers etc. Being a second hand unit there could be 101 other things wrong with it, if it can't be demonstrated then I would adjust the price accordingly and be prepared to perform a few repairs.

Cutters probably need sharpening and/or replacing.
Feed rollers could need cleaning/adjusting.
Beds derusting etc.
Table up and down adjustment could be stiff and /or clogged with sawdust/grease mix.

Depending on the machine, belts can be pricey, eg mine is a triple belt setup and replacement is a few hundred if you care about its performance youll ideally get a matches set and these increase in price further.

Other than that things youll want to pay attention to are:
- table is parrallel to cutting head
- surface is flat
- everything lubed and not binding ie rollers, table lifiting mech, and cutting head
- bearings operate smoothly, hard to tell in a machine but bearings shouldnt be clunky and noisy.
- motor appear in general good condition.

Im my experience any listing that says a machine needs a service is trying to sell you a neglected machine. So unless youre mechanically minded or know someone who knows what they are doing. Id steer clear unless its an absolute bargain, in which case id also evaluate whether its too good to be true scenario.
