    Default My new toys

    Thanks to advice here and on-the-spot assistance from Pops, I have some new toys that are more-or-less ready to use.

    I think.

    The toys are this thicknesser and this jointer

    The instructions are silent on the removal of the grease, so what I've done is this:

    Using paper towels and some kerosine (because it dissolves grease and evaporates) wiped/washed all the grease I could find on the tables, fences and other greasy external surfaces.
    Using cloth (having discovered where the rag bag went after the last house-move), wiped all the grease off along the length of the cutters and the cylinders that hold them.

    Using this slippery stuff I've coated tables and fences.

    Dust extraction will be done with an Hafco DC-3

    Is there anything I should watch for before turning them on and making chips? I'm wondering whether the firs few pieces through might pick up some grease from somewhere.

    It looks like you did the right thing. The grease comes off with CRC or WD-40 but the kero works fine. Silverglide or other wax based concoctions will prevent rust and help smooth the surface.

    Putting a test piece or two through should clear any residual gunk.

    Default Parts left over

    There were four grub screws left over. After an email exchange I can report that the manual gives on information of how to attach the extension wings. Page 19 of this manual describes the process well enough.

    The grub screws are termed "set screws" in the manuals. I had no idea of what that term means.

    Make sure you apply silverglide after the every use, do this for the first three or four substantial uses and this tends to add layers which helps to protect cast iron surfaces longer.
