Woodman 10" HH Planer/Thicknesser - views?
I popped into Greg Mach thru the week and saw this machine - looks like a good compromise for me as I'll seldom work wider stock than this and I'm set on a HH unit.
Price is similar to a straight blade 12" unit - $2,865.
Problem is that there is very little info online about the unit - as in nothing!
Keen to hear any feedback / views.
Cheers, James

This thread goes back some, but still relevant I think if the PT-310 code is still the same. Some reviews online on the Woodfast unit.

I was looking it too but picked up a very used 6" woodman jointer so I'll make do with this now and upgrade to something like that combo machine in a couple of years.

I bit the bullet and bought the Woodman 10". Reading through the manual it is almost 100% a re-badged JET 10" machine with a helical cutter. 95% of the parts are "JPT-260-..." or JPT-310-..."
The Jet 10" is $2,799 from Carbatech - straight cutter.

The Woodman is $2,865 from Gregory Mach with a helical... Why would anyone buy a Jet???

I am looking forward to making lots of shavings with it!

Yeah I think they are basically the same machine. The only differences aside from the exterior are; the cast tables on the jet are machined/corrugated, the feed rate is half that of the woodman, and I'm not sure if the helical cutters are exactly the same. The 12" also has a depth gauge/counter on the thicknesser.
It's funny how much prices have changed over the last few years, with some machines going up a heap and others not so much. The Jet 260 straight blade was $1800 when i first started looking. Shortly thereafter it went up to about $2200 and I bought the 12" helical jpt310 for $3400. Now the jpt310 is like $4600, meanwhile the woodman hasn't increased much. The 10" hh in particular seems like a no brainer if 10" is wide enough.
Good job. A good buy I think.

I've now had the chance to spend a bit of time on the machine. I bought a 3m length of super flex 4" duct and this made the conversion between modes very quick and easy.
As DomAU mentioned, there are a few subtle differences are the corrugations on the tables and the feed rate. I find the feed rate just fine. It's actually slower than my Delta 12.5" bench top planer.
The 10" and 12" Woodmans also have the depth gauge on the dial - it is super accurate too as checked with my verniers.
I made a rolling base for it - an essential addition for a machine of this weight in my opinion.
I'm loving it - no regrets and it is a fine addition to my workshop.
If anyone has any questions - fire away.
Cheers, JK

Hi J K
Are you still happy with this machine. I was seriously considering the jet 12 “ combo
but carbatech have none available until ‘maybe’ February. I am reconsidering my options now.
Any feed back would be much appreciated. Thank you.

All the old Woodman gear used to be made in Taiwan as far as I know ( or any of the machines I used anyway ) and was solid as all get out in the tradition of the older US and English brands. I've used Woodman tablesaws, spindle moulders and jointers and they weren't known for being pretty or having lots of features but once set up properly though they were very good at what they did and lasted a long, long time if looked after. A good indication of how well they are regarded is how much some of their older gear goes for on ebay or Gumtree.

Oh my goodness. I took delivery of the Woodman 12" this week and used it for the first time today. Sooooo quiet. I could even hear the Triple J Top 100 while it was running and I never have the radio loud.
The young delivery guy was kind enough to get it up the long driveway, up a ramp around the lemon tree (he was so worried about damaging it!) and up to the door of the workshop for me on his electronic trolley (with dying battery). After unboxing it, moving it off the high pallet and into the workshop and then onto a mobile base was an interesting bonding session with hubby. I was sure it was going to end up on its side when I wasn't watching. Lucky I am a planner and good problem solver, and with a quick call to WoodPixel to confirm I was approaching the task appropriately, the eagle was landed. [WoodPixel is now jealous]
The manual had nothing about attaching the fence but I managed to work it out with no parts remaining. Tables are perfectly coplanar and fence 90deg. NO adjustment necessary.
I flicked a 4" flexi from the bandsaw to the 'new guy' and ran a couple of thick boards through both planer and thicknesser which will end up being used for faces on the bench vice. Beautiful. And no dust anywhere.
I'm in love. I was very lucky with the purchase as I was after the 10" and when I went to order it was told that there were none in stock and it appears that no one has been able to get them for 6 months or so. I asked for, and then received, their 'best price' on a 12" upgrade. I did very well.

Well it's two years down tracks and I'm researching jointer/thicknesser combo machines - how have the Woodman's faired?
It seems Carbatec have stopped storing the Jet machines which is what I had my eyes one, so affordable options now look to be Woodman, Woodfast, Carbatec... although I can't seem to find a price on line for Woodfast without sending an inquiry, and I'm not that keen on the Carbatec machines for some reason

No one local in Canberra either. I got mine from Gregory Machinery in Brisbane. Here's there link to the 10".
I believe it is the same as the Jet. Apparently it comes out of the factory next door to Jet and all the stamped model numbers etc on the pallet was the same as Jet. I am so pleased I got the 12" although I was after the 10" which nobody in the country could get at the time.
Gregory Machinery was excellent to deal with when I had problems with the main switch when it was 8 mths old. We did some backwards and forwards troubleshooting over the phone and emails and when it was accepted that returning it to the shop wasn't an option they arranged for a local machine engineer to visit at home and replace the switch which they mailed to me. There was no charge for any of this.
