Thread: Is it worth it? CL 1918 8 inch Crescent jointer

Hi all,

I've been looking for a jointer for a good while and have through my research have discovered 80+ year old jointers made by Crescent and other companies. I absolutely love the amount of cast iron parts, the level of craftsmanship present in these machines, and the overall "cool factor" that these give off. Without even bringing its historical value into the equation, needless to say I want one now! I have found a model on Craigslist about an hour away from me that seems to be a bit high from other models I've seen posted ($600), but the lister claims that it was given a new paint job which admittedly looks very nice and that there are new parts on it. The new parts are new oil cups, two new sets of knives, and most importantly new babbit bearings on it which is a big deal from what I've researched. It comes with a 3hp 1 phase motor that has *no motor mount. Along with needing a motor mount, it badly needs the tables adjusted to be made co-plane. Other than that, it seems to be a very nice looking machine with a rust free bed and body. I dont think it comes with a switch for the motor, but I've heard that this is an easy addition to make by one's self. I'm very interested, but before I make contact I thought that I would pick more knowledgable brains about how good a deal is and what potential this machine has. I will also say that I very graciously inherited my grandfather's woodworking shop that has more than enough space for this behemoth, so space is no issue. Thank you all for your feedback!
